2001 Henri Bourgeois 'La Vigne Blanche' (Sancerre)

Post by GraemeG »

One of those 'taking my palate for a stroll' wines! Pale straw with a flash of green. The nose first hit me with smoky gunflint aromas, but some grassy/straw notes were present underneath. On the palate, the first impression is of fruit ripeness and cleanliness - something that I understand has casued Bourgeois to be seen as very much toward the New World end of the Sancerre spectrum. Rich and almost sweet fruit is carried right through the palate by tingly, not brutal, acidity. The finish seems almost sweet with it's reasonable length, weighty impact (relatively), and general warmth (12.5%). This is a sauvignon that I could drink a lot of, although at the price ($28), and despite the wonderful way it accompanied the barbequed fish, I'm not likely to be buying a lot of it.

Still it makes a pleasant change. Definitely recommended.

cheers,
Graeme

Just proves Melbourne is light-years behind Sydney!....no, no, actually, many people have said that I'm a man ahead of my time.

I'll make future tasting notes before I've opened the bottle - makes it so much easier to return the corked ones...

cheers,
