Peel Estate Shiraz 2006

Post by Waiters Friend »

Peel Estate tends to release its Shiraz at 5-6 years old, so this wine, at 9 years old, is still a youth. This wine won some awards at the time of release, including one or two international awards, and this is a lousy year for reds in WA (although blessed in the east of Australia)

Purple in colour and clear as a bell. The nose has a lot jostling for attention: plum pudding, rosemary, olive tapenade, cocoa, even roses (?). The palate is incredibly balanced, tannins, acid and a silky texture before a very long and satisfying finish.

I can see why it got the accolades.

Cheers

I really liked the 2006 vintage of this Peel too Allan. I remember having it at their Shiraz tasting for the 2006 vintage and it stood up really well in good company (if my memory is correct I think I had the Best's Thomsom family as my pick). 2006 was a cooler(?) vintage for WA so I guess Peel are north enough to help their cause.

I've drunk all that I bought already, enjoyed the lot.
Cheers

An update on this one. If anything, it's improved since 2015 (not surprisingly, given the outcomes of the vertical http://forum.m.auswine.com.au/forum3/viewto ... 48#p128371.)

It's a little richer than before, with more Christmas cake, chocolate and dark fruits. while the palate is full and satisfying, with blueberries, chocolate and some viscosity. There's some tannic grip, and a very long finish. Very very good indeed,

My last bottle (sob!)

Crimson in colour. Some of the dark fruits are heading into the red spectrum, however, many of the features from 2 years ago remain - especially the Christmas cake and chocolate. There's also a whiff of leather polish.

The palate is very good indeed - intense but not too rich or heavy, and the acid is keeping some freshness (in what is now a 15 year old wine). Tannins are fully integrated, and the finish is very long - I will be tasting this for a long time.

This is holding up very well. Unfortunately, I probably won't get to see it at 20 - but it might get there.

Cheers
