ADL: Quiet offline Friday night or BYO rec?

Hi to all the ADL crew,

I'm in town with a fellow Bulldog supporter to watch them run all over Port on Sat night.

I'm up for a quiet offline on Friday night if anyone about? If not what's the BYO scene of late?

cheers,

Jamie

Friday night sounds good.
Any thoughts on a theme or a venue?

Mark

I'm OK with any theme that presents good quality wines. As there will be myself and another friend who can raid my cellar, I'll probably end up bringing a top end Rhone white to start and a couple of vintage reds. I'm happy with AUstralian reds or I can do foreign.

Venue? I'm not really up with the scene so any suggestions appreciated.

Hey Guys
I'm still in QLD Friday night so I won't be there, but can recommend La Bonne Table as a BYO venue. I think they've recently increased their corkage from $15 to $20/bottle, but food and service was really good for a long lunch recently. Glassware isn't as good as it could be, but isn't disastrous either.
Chianti Classico is I think $25/bottle (might be $20, but I think $25) with excellent glassware. They've recently updated their menu, and my last couple of meals there have been really enjoyable.
Cheers
Nick

No hockey this Friday so I will be in that Jamie.

Put me down, I will bring something with appropriate greatness.

I dont mind where it is, somewhere that serves great food would be nice :)

Sorry Jamie & co, I won't be able to make this one because I am locked in with an invite to a big, boozy birthday lunch the following day. :(

$20/bottle corkage with ordinary glassware? I know the standard of Adelaide dining has slipped the last couple of years and places are struggling, but bugger me...

Cheers,
Ian

I would be keen to attend an offline in the future (haven't surfaced for one yet) but I'm in the same boat as above.
Have a mates B'day following day and the grape juice will be flowing.

Gents

I'm happy with $20+ corkage though we'd need decent glassware for the wines. I'm still seething with 1918 in the Barossa providing 70's sports club quality glassware for vintage magnums of Aussie greats. Appellation restored my faith with a $20 corkage and great stems and professional service.

I had a chuckle when I read this. You're spot on mate. Last time I was at 1918 the boss and I thought it was extremely ho-hum.

Should have been clearer, glassware at la Bonne Table better than average, just not full sets of Riedels. And agree, $20/bottle has unfortunately become the new standard.
Agree with Insieme as a good recommendation as well.

Shall I try and book Insieme? If yes, for how many people? By my count we currently only have Jamie, Mark W, me and my +1. Any other takers?

I'd love to proceed Mark. Myself plus a friend.

I'll bring a white and two reds. I've private emailed you both and happy to go higher end. I'll give my mate a free reign on my cellar for his bottle and despite some pretty slick foreign stuff he'll go vintage Oz. In that case I'll bring a few hard to get foreigners ( 1x white & 1 x red ).

Jamie,

That's such a shame that you had a disappointing time at 1918. You should have asked the very friendly owner, Syd, or any of the other nice staff for better stemware. If you do, they'll happily supply decent oversized glasses, that, whilst not being Zaltos, do the job very well.

The food is very good and the staff are brilliant. When in the Barossa they are a great choice for dinner and BYO is always a good choice especially in the cellar door heavy Barossa.

(Disclosure: I have no connection with the above mentioned establishment.)

Concur and Appellation with $20 corkage I'm drooling over right now. Local produce and menu with very professional service. A bit expensive but then again, the magnums mishandled by 1917 were pretty expensive too- 96 & 98 Basket Press, Craiglee Shiraz 1990.

Appellation is far more expensive iirc.

To be honest I've not had high opinions about 1918 in the past, but they had a change of ownership in February this year and I've never had more genuinely nice people serving elsewhere.

They're certainly not wine experts, but they're very humble and willing to follow any requests given. If you are doing a serious wine tasting, you're probably best off elsewhere.

If you haven't been there recently, give them a shot. You may be pleasantly surprised.

I'm happy to give them another shot. Just means I might have to skip the Lamb pie at Charles Melton.
Hmmmm.

Will be going to 1918 for one of our lunches at a Barossa tour in late Sept, so will report back
