2009 Lindemans Limestone Ridge Vineyard Shiraz Cabernet Sauvignon, Coonawarra (screwcap): 14.5% alc. Dark to inky red/purple. Quite dusty and oaky, full of ripe blackberry and boysenberry, black tea, a little weedy at times, as much from the oak as from the fruit. The palate's quite big and chunky for something predominantly Coonawarra shiraz, sweet-fruited with a minty mid-palate and finish with chalky/grippy tannins; there's definitely some heat here, no doubt it's a brawny wine that needs to settle down, although I still suspect it's a little too much on the ripe side. Time will tell.

Thanks for the notes Ian, much appreciated. This is clearly a very young wine as can be seen by the colour alone. I don't think I have a Limestone Ridge in the cellar but I do recall the first Limestone Ridge I ever had - it was the 1988 - and it was delicious in a ripe, roasted, earthy fashion. I probably tasted it in the mid-90s and I loved it.

I recently found a 98 Limestone Ridge in a case buried deep in the cellar. You may be pleased to know it's turned into a really moorish wine and much better than I was expecting.

I had one a few weeks ago and enjoyed it. Still a fair bit of oak, but at least the fruit isn't OTT.

Sometimes there is interesting old stuff, back vintages, cleanskins etc.

Must say that the 91 Limestone Ridge has been really great with a few bottles had over the last 4-5 years

One of the reasons I was so pleased about my enjoyment of this wine was I had also purchased a reasonable amount of the Pyrus 98 at the time. Over time I was seriously disappointed with the Pyrus. Hence I opened the Limestone Ridge with seriously low expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Much more fun than opening a wine with high expectations and being seriously disappointed.

I recall tasting the Lindeman's trio of 1998 wines at cellar door back in 2001 - the cellar door was just north of Penola on the left-hand side. I thought all three were quite good so I'm surprised that the '98 Pyrus has been disappointing. The last Pyrus I had was the '86 back in 2004, and it was lovely. Perhaps the '98 is in a dumb phase and still requires time.

Sadly I have often wondered if I did in fact drink it during its dumb phase. As I have posted elsewhere I saw the impact of drinking a Bordeaux blend too early with a case of Petaluma 2001 Coonawarra I purchased. I started drinking them within ten years and was really disappointed so I buried the case deep and forgot about it. I found it again recently and with 13 years in the bottle the wine is now superb and chalk and cheese when compared with earlier bottles.

I've learned the same thing as well - that if a wine is disappointing, or otherwise closed and reticent, then best forget about it for a while and see where it goes. After all, there's nothing to lose if one already dislikes it, and everything to gain if it improves - and more often then not it will.

Coonawarra Wine Gallery has been closed for several months, and is currently on the market.
I was in Coonawarra over the weekend and the steel gates look like they have been in the closed position for sometime now.

Will wait to see what the position will be on these wines that have not had a proper home for sometime now, that sadly are now on the streets.

Interestingly, the beautiful wine wine room adjacent to the Menzies Retreat accommodation offered by Yalumba has been shut for many months as well.
Wonder what will happen here?
