2010 Produttori Del Barbaresco Barbaresco

Like in 2006, Produttori made the brave decision to not bottle their single vineyard labels, and blend it all into their standard label.
At the price, a bargain.

On opening, showing lifted quality fruit aromas, elegance on the palate with drying tannins. Then it shut down pretty quickly. Decided to give it extended breathing.
The next night was sublime, showing opened richness and length, lovely aromas, the fruit balancing out the tannins more.
The third night was nothing short of hedonistic. A sheer delight to drink, very.very complex.

This was outstanding value, and will live for decades. The longer left the better.

Just received an offer for the 2011. 150 for 12 in bond. Pounds that is. Still a bargain though.

Yeap....Consistently pretty good and has the ability to age...and cheap. They tend to meet my expectations more than their single vineyards which are also priced nicely (even though they're about twice the price of the standard one).

I reckon I got that offer too Carl, good price. I just did a buy with that crowd and grabbed a case of the 2010 so I'm glad to hear form Rory it going well.
Cheers

I checked if Gavin stocks these (he doesn't), and was wondering if anyone has seen these anywhere in Adelaide? Would like to pick up a couple without the freight costs if possible..

Long time lurker coming out from under my shell.

Apparently, 2010 wasn't half as good in Barbaresco as in Barolo. It's hard to find a consensus as to which is the best vintage. Seems 2012 isn't it.

Anyone?

Thats true, but the fact that Produttori blended in all of their Riservas into the 2010 must make it a cut above. I have a doz. But I'm not the one to ask as I haven't got the Barolo bug.

Welcome, by the way :D

Hacker. Thanks.

There's a video on the net with a guy from pdb who basically says that even with the single vineyards blended in it's not such a good vintage or words to that effect. I'll try to find it if I have time....

In any case, a lot of experts I've read prefer the blend, saying it's a better overall representation of the winery. Just their opinion, though.

Any opinions on the best vintage for this wine?

Got it.

Great to see such honesty. Probably why they are so good at their jobs, less bs, more effort to make good wine at good prices.

I see the 2006 is priced much higher in some cases than the following vintages. So the market seems to like it.....

2011 an absolute cracker in Barbaresco and slipping under the radar a bit.

Cheers Jamie. Have you had chance to try the PDB 2011? What other vintages have you tried 2008? 2009? Others? Thanks.

1967, 1970 and 1974 amazing.

Nowadays, real mother in law wines, crowd pleasers and good wines but they don't reflect the best of what Barbaresco has to offer. You can not go wrong with their wines but don't expect Giacosa/Gaja...

It usually gets very positive reviews from the pros/geeks, but thanks for your honest opinion!

Wish my mother in law drank PdB

An intellectual property claim. I'm out of here, I can't afford another one - enough in real life :)

Hmmm. Sounds interesting. I won't ask you to elaborate here :D

Have been there, too. Different outcome, though, it seems....

I'm not dismissing the wines they are often very good and I can't say I've ever had a bad bottle. Some of the older wines are freaks, in part I suppose, to having fruit from what are now some of the great single vineyard sites of Barbaresco.

Barbaresco is a much smaller area than Barolo. As many of the former Produttori fruit contributors have gone out on their own and with the advent of single vineyard wines, there are only so many great nebbiolo slopes in the area. Evidently, nebbiolo is also planted in sites less than favorable now the red wine boom has hit. There are other factors too such as the philosophy of the co-op.

And on the pro reviewers, tread warily! I'm amazed at the B&B experts sexing up Piedmont for expedience and reviewers with sweet f&A^ all experience in the area. I'm finding the best advice come from the locals and the "geeks", long time drinkers with nebbiolo battle hymns- a most fickle grape.

I just ordered 5 cases of the 2010 & 2011 Barbaresco and nebbiolo 2011. Splitting the cases amongst friends.

Thanks for the elaboration Jamie. That makes sense. The fact you are ordering it yourself says a lot, too - your standards for Piedmont wine are very high!

For me, a Mother in law drink would be a generic MSB or maybe bottom end SA shiraz.

At the price, a bargain.

This was outstanding value, and will live for decades. The longer left the better.

My case arrived a few days ago and 2 x bottles gone.

Agree totally. Wow ! A wonderful introduction to Barbaresco as always, but in 2010 an absolute bargain. There is an underlining austerity which could define the lack of weight to justify single vineyard bottlings in this vintage, but, as per usual for mine, this vintage called way too early by critics. Very impressive! Delighted with this wine.

Great to hear! I only have the one bottle stashed away, might have to add a few more. Possible drinking window?

Now until its nebbiolo dumb phase which may not be as dramatic as say a Gaja. Then in a proper cellar it will still be providing interest in 30 years +

Any suggestions on when you feel the dumb phase may kick in for the 2010 PdB? Or is it really too hard to tell...

I've put a few away in the cellar and drank one bottle myself so far, slightly understated but very elegant and interesting if you give it the time (and right glasswear).
