1998 Moondah Brook Cabernet Sauvignon (Swan Valley?)

Still crimson red, but certainly a little lighter towards the edges. The nose is prominent (that's been said of me as well) with ripe blackcurranty fruit, not much cabernet herbaceuosness, but with a very velvety warmth to it. It's not a cold-climate wine, that's for sure. The immediately youthful aromas have died down a bit, but I wouldn't say there are prominent developmental characteristics appearing. The palate still has plenty of powerful, though quite fine, tannins, but the wine seems very low in acid to me. It has a bit of a doughnut effect too - medium bodied, but the finish fades relatively quickly. Having said all that, which sounds rather harsh, it's a pretty good drop for the $13 it cost 3 years ago, and represents satsifactory, if perhaps not inspiring, drinking now. Don't leave it another 10 years, though...
cheers,
Graeme
