In HK for a few days.

1 x 1996 Chateau D'Yquem

1 x 1998 Chateau D'Yquem

1 x 2004 Taittinger Comtes de Champagne

Plus a few burgundies to drink with dinner.

Need to try and hit up my travel companion to take another 3 of the Taittinger back to sydney for me. She wants to buy some duty free Hendricks. I am going to tell her I will buy her some bloody Hendricks in Sydney! :D

Try to keep your hands off them for some years as this will be an excellent wine down the track.... (says the guy who's planning to open one on Saturday...)

Bought some of the 2010 Signature as I tried it at the Langtons tasting and thought it was brilliant. Was avoiding the 2011 FDR1a due to the vintage. Have you tried it?

Cheers

Yes actually I tried the FDR1A and not the Signature as the cellar door is nearly out. But I had heard good reviews and the cellar door staff were very friendly and helpful in selling us a cold rose and providing glasses for us to have a lovely picnic outside that I felt it only right to make a small purchase.

I didnt expect much of the FDR1A given the vintage but actually I thought it was excellent, and was my pick of the reds they did have on tasting.

The 2012 Virgilius though was the pick for me at Yalumba overall - a stunning example of this label and one of the best value white wines around for a flagship.

a night off, and I zipped over to HK for a Gevrey Chambertin tasting.
Whilst there, picked up my magnum of Clos St Jean Sanctus Sanctorum 2010
Only 800 in existence, described by RPJ as the world's greatest wine and by others as the holy grail of wine. I have had both the Combe de Fous and Deus ex Machina from the same vintage (the other two CSJ super-cuvees), and if it is better than those, then it was money very well spent.
hmmm, maybe bring to an off-line in 2020? :D

1 x 3L Irvine Grand Merlot 1998.
3 x 1996 Irvine Grand Merlot
1 x 1996 Yalumba Octavius Shiraz (Festivus drinks)

I will open the jeroboam when I finally get around to submitting a publication I have been sitting on for the last 4 years.

I was the same as you, I always thought 3L was a jeroboam, but recently I was told this is a 5L bottle, and 3L is simply a double magnum. Any clues?

Ah ha, a mystery Felix!
Well the below guide seems largely accurate, but then I checked on the beloved Wikipedia and it mentions the below factoid:

Jeroboam Wine Facts and Information
JEROBOAM: A wine bottle holding 4/5 of a gallon (3.03 litres).

The Jeroboam wine or champagne bottle is large, able to hold four standard size bottles of wine (4 x 750cl).
The Jeroboam wine bottle is also known as a Double-Magnum bottle holding the same amount of Wine.

The Jeroboam bottle varies with different regions in France. i.e Jeroboam 3 Liters in Champagne (4 Standard Bottles), and Jeroboam 4.5 Liters in Bordeaux (6 Standard Bottles).
A jeroboam is a very large wine bottle, able to hold the same quantity as 4 bottles of wine (3 litres) in the case of champagne and port, and 6 bottles of wine (4.5 litres) in the case of claret.

Mystery solved! 8)

Wine Bottle Sizes Chart
http://winefolly.com/tutorial/wine-bottle-sizes/

187.5 ml Piccolo or Split: Typically used for a single serving of Champagne.
375 ml Demi or Half: Holds one-half of the standard 750 ml size.
750 ml Standard: Common bottle size for most distributed wine.
1.5 L Magnum: Equivalent to two standard 750 ml bottles.
3.0 L Double Magnum: Equivalent to two Magnums or four standard 750 ml bottles.
4.5 L Jeroboam (still wine): Equivalent to six standard 750 ml bottles.
6.0 L Imperial: Equivalent to eight standard 750 ml bottles or two Double Magnums.
9.0 L Salmanazar: Equivalent to twelve standard 750 ml bottles or a full case of wine!
12.0 L Balthazar: Equivalent to sixteen standard 750 ml bottles or two Imperials.
15.0 L Nebuchadnezzar: Equivalent to twenty standard 750 ml bottles.

Felix, thanks for the correction. I guess you are right in this case as the 3L bottle is a Merlot. The name varies from place to place and seems to be reasonably interchangeable i.e. Burgundy and Champagne 3L = Jeroboam. Bordeaux = Double Magnum
See http://www.winecommunity.com.au/bottle-sizes.htm
and
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Wine_bottle
I guess being a Merlot probably falls into the Bordeaux category but maybe I'll give Irvine wines a call and see what they like to call it - probably a double magnum.

beat me to it Sam!

Hi Jamie,
it was just a tasting with about 30 people at L'Imperatrice. Great night, some of those Honkies are just awesome at picking Burgs blind.
haha, but it was funny, there was a "mystery" wine in one of the flights, and the Burg nuts flew ridiculous theories all around the room, about Passetougrain, Bourgogne Rouge from a ripe vintage, weird biodynamic red etc etc. When asked, I piped up for the first time all night and simply said "this is Chateauneuf du Pape". To me, it was bleeding obvious!!!!!!! Turned out to be a Barroche 2012 CNDP, leaving them all scratching their heads (as you would know, most Honkies and Mainlanders think France is divided into Bordeaux and Burgundy, with Italy next door :D :D )
the wines were just ok, and confirmed my theory that 2011 was indeed utter crap. 2012 is not too bad, on a par with 08 IMO. One of the gurus picked 90% of the wines totally blind, we are talking producer, vineyard and vintage…. it was staggering to watch. His tales of Burgundy were incredible, particularly about the deception of 2011 and 2013, which he calls the two worst vintages of the past 50 years. And when you think about that, geez, they gotta be really bad!!!!

9 x Mascarello Barolo 2010 ( wow try getting these anywhere I know Maria Teresa from regular visits and a 3 bottle limit now a 1 bottle limit and now gone )

6 x del Pino Barbaresco Albesani 2010

6 each of Cavallotto's Barolo Riservas San Gisueppe and Vignolo 2008

12 x 2005 Lynch Bages

12 x 2005 Chateau Palmer

Dabbling in wine investment and will buy lots of 05 Bordeaux with prices down and get them to Australia and see how they go. Though I'm sure I will have a nice Bdx cellar in 15 years I can't see Australia's secondary market delivering and outstanding return. Anyways, will report back! :D

With TRS refund Mike?

The $AUD has a fair way to fall. Interesting times and I'd suggest if smaller producers could get international logistics sorted there would be some new markets in Asia. I just had 300 bottles delivered from Verduno ( near Barolo ) and paid 1.80USD per bottle for air con on truck, air con container and HKG air con truck delivery. Talking to importers here in HKG Oz logistic costs way beyond that
