Dan Murphy Help!!!

Post by Chacon »

Hi all,

Longtime viewer on this forum, first time poster

I was hoping the knowledgeable people on this forum can answer my question in regards to dan murphy.

So went into DM, just for a browse, to my suprise found a bottle of 2010 St Henri for $80. I asked the staff if they had any other bottles left, he went checked his computer and told me that there was another 20 bottles at another store. So I raced down to thw other DM hoping to buy all the bottles, when I got there there was only 3 bottles available, they checked their system again and it still confirms 20 bottles

There was also another instance in regards to the xandu 2011 where there was 12 bottles in their system but when I got to the DM there was none left.

So my question is how reliable is the DM Stocktake system?? I asked them if the bottles where on hold and they confirmed that it wasnt. WHAT IS GOING ON??

Thanks in advance for your responses

My experience is it is pretty good. Most of the time the wine will be in another section/area of the store. I was looking for some 2009 Mt Langhi and shop was showing 5 we looked in the Shiraz section, the cheaper section, vintage release, out the back, and then there is the quirky/little bit more expensive section right in the back corner and there they were.

So they may have been moved or shoplifted

One thing you need to watch is the vintage. They list both the wine with the current vintage and vintages of a particular wine so it doesn't guarantee that wine and vintage combination to be in store even though it lists that wine and the current vintage. As dave_vino said, it could be in different parts of the store. With one of my close ones, a fairly nice wine might be in two spots sorted around the variety, the cellar release or the Langton's area.

Redav is right. I used to work at a dans, saw problems like this all the time.
They do stocktake twice a year per store, different times of year for each store... they whip in a woollies team of 8-10 counters who don't know a shiraz from a pack of arnott's shapes and they have them in and out of the store in 2-3 hours before the shop opens. Too expensive to have them do it properly. I used to come in and fix their counts, saved the store about 2-3k each time. Trouble is most people there don't have that attention to detail. Vintage specific counts don't happen. It's all lumped in together.
Usually, Penfolds premium wines are the exception, as they come with new barcodes each vintage that have to be entered in. You would think that's fool proof, but the stocktake team are really, really shit. They don't care either, they don't get paid nearly enough. But any number of things could have happened. A wine like St. Henri could be in up to 5 different sections of the store, or even buried out the back. Or maybe it's an online store, where they pick from the shelves but the stock on hand isn't updated until the next day. But with 17 odd bottles of $80 wine missing, my bet is that they're really '09s that have been counted as 10s by the incompetent stocktake team.

Thanks guys for your response, really helped clear things up in regards to DM :D

Second question, have you ever got any real bargains or hard to find wines from D?

Go to a quiet store. One with little foot traffic in a not-so well off area of town. You'll be surprised what you find, because of how little they pay attention to vintage, and how poor the stock rotation is... With a bit of digging, you can find old vintages under the current vintages price - meanwhile, they have the same old vintage in the 'cellar release' section for $20 more.
