Heard Mark Wickman on ABC Adelaide talking about the background of some remarkable wines - Port and Sauterne - made in Adelaide in the 19th century that are going to be auctioned next week. The funds are being raised to fund maintenance of the historic home where the wines were found. But Mark was saying that although the mansion was up in the foothills of the Adelaide Hills, that the grapes were grown in Brighton by the Adelaide waterfront. That seems odd. But then I read a story about these wines in today's The Australian -

Would be great to know because it is the last place in Adelaide you would think there would be vineyards

There's definitely vineyards in Marion, in Adelaide.
And Magill (Estate) of course.

There was definatley vineyards towards that part of town in the past. When I worked at Penfold's (Magill Estate) I remember seeing photos of vineyards over near the race-course (Morphetville area).
If your keen to find out the finer details give the Cellar Door at Magill a call and speak to John Miller (Chip), He should be able to fill you in.
Cheers, Pok

Brighton was a town not a suburb in those days with lots of open land to the south..

Fantastic story, and excellent free publicity for Mark's upcoming auction - I think there may be a few more people online for it, I hope they system can cope!
Cheers,
Ian

System is fine Ian (fingers crossed).. Beefed it up, running some tests now.. was worried there for a bit because it was real slow on responding on some things but figured what was causing it and now it should go great.. as always, let me know if you notice something wrong.
