Hey guys

Need to pick up some new glasses for when I occasionally crack a bottle of an evening in the office with colleagues. I refuse to continue using the crap we have in the kitchen here. So I think I will pick up half a dozen Universals and maybe a Zalto decanter if I can get my hands on one too.

My question is, where have people bought them? I am struggling to find any local retail suppliers? Am I just a total search muppet?

Zaltos for the office? Can I come work for you

There are a few internet sites (ie bibendum, macphees based in Australia) that you can order Zaltos but they are around $60 each. I'm sure there are Zalto owners out there that can tell you where they got theirs from. Sadly, I'm not one of them. Hope this helps

Zaltos for work drinks? Dont suppose you'll be drinking lafite out of them will you? in which case ill love to come work for you as well

Oh I mean I don't have drinks often at work but sure when we do there is usually some champagne and something else decent floating around. I have a couple of 2002 fox creek reserve shiraz and some decent Pinot earmarked for next time. Last time one of the guys whipped out a Giaconda Chardy....but let's face it whatever we are drinking it will taste better out of a Zalto at the moment we have glassware of unknown origin, though a few of the guys keep a small stash if Riedels in their rooms

Since the tax man is subsidising the glasses why not?

I have an increasingly dwindling supply of the Champagne glasses. They are incredibly lightweight, but excellent nonetheless.

Yeah all of their glasses look amazing but I think for work just a set or universals will be ok, cover the bases.

think I paid $50 a glass not all that long ago from Prince wine store, give them a try.

Zalto's are the best for red white and sparkling, IMO. They have gone well past Riedel. (which is annoying, as I own a stack of Riedels)

How do people feel Zaltos deliver New World wines? Namely Australian shiraz I guess.

I reckon Australian shiraz is actually better in a Riedel, particularly the Riedel shiraz glass. The Zalto's can make the really big shiraz seem a little too alcoholic. Evens out much more with aged (12+) Aus shiraz, and I actually prefer Rhones out of the Zalto.

It isn't every big red but a lot of them I've seen the Zalto basically spike the alcohol on the nose for me...it probably has to do with the same reasons a lot of wines will show better...but I wouldn't say this applies to all New World wines...in fact, probably not most of them....

My general opinion of Zaltos is that on any given wine, another glass might show better...but on average the Zaltos seem to be doing a better job...Not to mention they're addicting to use. Even if they're showing equally well, they're just enjoyable to use...

I actually think if you aren't using them now or haven't used them, it might be better NOT using them because once you get used to how light they are, it makes everything else seem clunky...

Great initiative Gavin and I hope people make the move toward Zalto as they are profound in how they celebrate a wine.

I was concerned about how they fair with Oz shiraz so I tried this last night. A 94 Mt Edelstone professionally cellared since release. To be fair to the Riedel, the wine wasn't aired in a decanter, I preferred to draw the cork before breakfast, to blow off any stink and let the wine rise in the glass.

Wow! I was so overwhelmed with the Zalto. The wine unravelled over the first glass where the fruit which was boarded over with a toast of seasoned oak for so long ( about 15 years before the 94 showed its true class ) and presented a multitude of reflections. Wonderful! But here's the thing; and as a nebbiolo drinker this has been Biblical. The wine's amazing nose was delivered in palate flavors.

In Riedel, the Mt Ed 94 was as expected but didn't show the complexity on the nose which had the oak evenly matched and not as supporting as Zalto. On the palate the wine was 4 square; in balance and a pleasure but just missing the magic.

Were you using Zalto Bordeaux or Burgundy glasses? Sorry I can't tell from the photo.

I'm also curious how people find the Universal Zalto, compared to the Bordeaux for (mainly Australian) Cabernet and Shiraz? I would like to get some Zaltos (eventually), and would get some Universals as I drink a lot of Riesling. So I'm wondering if it would be worth getting some Bordeaux glasses also, or if the Universals are truly universal.

Will, the universal is an awesome glass for younger Oz shiraz and very fruit-forward wines. In my experience, I prefer to use the universal for these types of wines.
My son is a chef in a top melbourne restaurant, and says the feedback on the universal is always spectacular.
I have the Zalto Bordeaux/Burgundy/Universal glasses, and use all three in equal amounts.

That's a Burgundy glass in the picture.

One word of caution with these glasses. In the hand, they are like a fighter jet, slippery, lightweight and responsive and you find yourself easily losing control if you gesticulate or raise the glass quickly to inspect color. The Riedel was clunky and safe.

I've lost control of only the one Zalto- a messy explosion of wine ( 98 Coleraine ) and glass.

But it's worth noting that the Zalto's are still stronger than they look. I always enjoy dinging them with a little bit of force on the corner of the table and seeing how shocked people are that they haven't exploded. (warning, do this at your own risk)

I use the Universals and Burgundy, and love them. Might get a couple of Bordeaux down the track, but no hurry as these two cover it all nicely for me. Perhaps not perfect for sweet wines, but still good.

And Champagne is superb in the Universal as well, forget flutes for anything other than cheap party bubbles.

The Zalto water glass is darn good for hoppy IPA's too!

I find the Universals best generally for young, fruit forward or florally delicate wines.

For the more savoury, earthy wines I sometimes prefer a bigger bowled glass if I can be bothered taking it along (not having Zalto Burgs yet, I use the Riedel Burgs).

For most tastings though the Universals are more than sufficient.

One thing about the Zaltos as touched on by Polymer above is they just feel so nice in the hand. I have a set in the office and all my colleagues who have used them have commented on how awesome they are. Has earned me a bit of respect which is worth the price of the glasses and then some I've even got a few of them converted to the idea of drinking champagne out of them, which freaked them out at first
