I was just having a look through some posts on a UK based wine forum, of which I've been a member of for many years, when I spotted a thread about bargains at Co-Op. We used to have a Co-Op not 250 meters from our house in Dorset, where we lived for 13 years. Well, two of the many bargains knocked me back a bit.

2008 Penfold's Kalimna and 2008 Chateau Pontensac? That will be £7 each thank you Sir.

I was having a chat to a mate of mine who does some associated work for this wine company
his thoughts are it is very much a two fold problem.

The obsession with the offshore push to the Chinese and US markets has failed.
Simultaneously the reputation for value in the Australian market has dissappeared....he does not even bother to forward me emails of suposed "staff specials" as they can be readily obtained elsewhere for far cheaper.

I have stated on this forum dozens of times before, I have never begrudged businesses making enough money to cover costs and a little extra so that they can keep going.
The constant price increases and gouging of Mr and Mrs Joe Public is far in excess of a little extra.

2008 Bin 28 at AUD$ 14. that would be a great start to restore some confidence.

Yes this thread brings back memories of buying Penfolds Grange at Tesco for £99/bottle a few years back when we were living in London. It always amazed me that you could buy quality Aussie wine overseas at much reduced prices than those that can be found here.

Whole-heartly agree with Craig's comments below.

If you look up the price of French wines on French websites, that will make you depressed too. Taxes there are even lower than in the UK.

You won't find so much Australian wine, though I remember hearing that NZ wine has become popular in Paris, at least with younger consumers.

Not forgetting Billaud-Simon Mont de Milieu '08 (£7), Travis.
Currently in its prime, with no need to rush.

Funny thing is I will be drinking quite a few Pennies reds that are 80+% cheaper than current release. Bin 28s at less than $10, 389s for $12, 707 for $25.
In the same period my house has not gone up 8 times or my income 800%

No kidding, what bargains! I too feel nauseous.

However, I must admit that I have found bargains here at my end of the world - Tahbilk Cabernet for $8, '03 Giaconda 'Les Deux' for $20, and, just yesterday, Laphroaig Quarter Cask for $38.

Yes it has been a loooonnng time between drinks. I hope they get up soon as I have a heap of 1995's I am keeping to celebrate their next premiership win. However, I feel they could be over the hill before a get to drink them though. Wish we were back in the early '80's ...
