1989 Cyril

More grot in the bottom of the bottle than you could poke a stick at.

Still quite bright colour with some bricking at the rim.

Nose somewhat subdued and the palate while fault free and holding its age well was pretty damn ordinary.

1951 Hardys Reserve Bin Show Port

A Shiraz based tawny, vintaged in 1951, 20 plus years in oak and bottled in the 70s under screwcap.

Tawny brown colour with yellow/green overtones, huge rancio/brandy nose, sensationally silky smooth on the palate. Bloody good stuff. Probably go for another 50.

Isn't it amazing how well some Tawny ports are drinking still !! I Had one of the 1951 reserves last year and it was just as you described. I had the bottle open for months and it was still drinking great right to the last drop !

I've got a 90 Cyril (or two) in the cellar and I've yet to try it .... usual story, wrong time, not yet, we're having seafood etc, etc, etc...

Having read from Davo that's the 89's "kaput" and that in another thread they're arguing whether the 93 is gone or not, has anyone tried recently the 90?? I'd like to know if I should crack the black labelled baby or let it grow old like moi

Advice sought from all august palates :)

Cheers
Mark G

Brad, Not fishing, just lurking.

Mark G, The Cyril was not kaput, just boring. others at the table raved about it but one had brought it and is a port drinker, the other knew little about wine apart from "I know what I like".
