Just saw this article... Now we have a book about Grange selling for more than 700 smackerinos Pardonnez-moi, je ne comprend pas?

A year in the life of Grange book launches today
Photographer Milton Wordley and writer Philip White will today launch their latest project — an exquisite 130-page book which delves into the life of Penfolds Grange.

The book was created over two-years and retails at a whopping $785.

The launch will be held at Penfolds Magill Estate in Adelaide and Grapegrower & Winemaker will be present to capture the event.

$785!!....I'd rather buy a bottle of grange and see for myself rather than read about it

I assume it comes with a free bottle of Grange.....or buy one grange, get the book for free.

A cheaper version of the book will be coming out later I think. This is a limited one made with kangaroo hide etc.

Can you take it in to be "tested" when it's 10 years old, and have any dirty pages replaced and re-bound?

Apologies Gavin, if you go onto Whitey's blog, there is a link to photographer Milton Wordley website.

The book that forumites are talking about is the cheapest!!
There are two other "limited" editions, a winemakers and something else "escapes me at the moment", but one is a run of only 100 at ...$4 GRAND a pop and the other of a two hundred run at over $1000.

I know Whitey looked up to the likes of Schubert and Beckwith and co, but feel he has sold out here...
On the one hand constantly bagging big companies feigning their corporate greed, like many of us do and that he has stated the madness of people chasing 30-40+ year old Grange that is probably shot..
and topping up the super on the back of one wine +/- fancy book with the other.

All for one wine and did not realise that photographic paper was so expensive

Penfolds’ $168K ampoule-wine tentatively sold at LCBO
One of the most expensive bottles of wine in the world has tentatively been sold at the Liquor Control Board of Ontario (LCBO). LCBO spokesperson Heather MacGregor said there are still some details to work out before the deal is finalised. The wine — a Kalimna Block 42 Cabernet Sauvignon 2004 produced by Penfolds in Australia — costs $168,000.

The key question is: what is it selling for on the secondary market?

If there was a locally printed and bound ( S Aust. ) book of 130 odd pages, on 200 gsm stock, measuring 18inches by about 20 inches, of say either Phar Lap or Peter Brock, with some amazing, beautifully presented photos, with a limited print run of say under 1750 copies (ever), do you think they'd be snapped up? Go figure!
This is not a Penfolds book. This is not Philip White's book. The photographer has been snapping wine-related shots, including Schubert/Grange for over 40 years. You've got every right to think it may be over-priced, but at least have a look at it first.

Does anyone notice Peter Gago looks somewhat bit of cheeky smug twat in the photos compared to previous respected Penfolds winemakers?

Wonder how much $$ Gago took home in the last financial year.

Not doubting that it is a beautiful book and yes well aware that Milton Wordley has been around for years and years here in SA...but $4000...taking the piss surely

Probably could have saved 30 -40% if printed in Singapore or China, but forgery concerns. The $4K edition also comes with 7 - 8 A4 sized mounted prints of the best photos in the book and is finished off in leather and American oak.
Certainly didn't buy one, but was at the launch. Ann Oliver's oyster pasties and the mini-pies that Max often enjoyed were washed down with a 'house-red', the '04 Grange from 'flagon'. If one got sick of that , there was 707 and Yatarna.
The highlight however was the launch speech giving by Max's daughter Sandy, focussing more on Max as a father than a cult winemaker. It was
lovely to sit next to her at Park Lok later and hear further stories.

No, I'm out west, about 4 hours by air from Toronto. Maybe if it turns up in Edmonton and if I can use my Air Miles card........

They are going to have to sell more than one ampoule to fund their upcoming legal costs

It is a beautiful book. My only complaint is that in the caption for the one picture of me, my name is misspelled.

Don't you think I should get a free copy for that?
