TN: 1998 Wynns Coonawarra Estate Shiraz

Post by markg »

Picked up a dozen of these at auction (somebody elses auction, not mine) at under $25 each and cracked one on the weekend.

Deep purple color and a nose of earthy rich plums and hints of eucalyptus. A lovely rich palate of chocolate, a hint of blue fruits, black olives and grainy tannins. A long finish and nicely balanced. An excellent wine for the price, very enjoyable.
Cheers

I hope it was way under $25 a bottle Mark. When it was available at retail it was only $12-15 per bottle.
Ciao,

You know it makes sense!

The price was:

Hammer Price: $18
Commission: $2.30
Shipping & Ins: $1.80

TOTAL: $22.10

I figure thats its relative worth considering its age, vintage and quality. Don't get me wrong, there is no way I would pay more than $11 for the 2001 vintage, its just not worth any more, but the 1998 is a different matter.

Mark

Glad you enjoyed this wine so much. I have mixed feelings about it now - I clearly remember it being available on release in 2000 for $9.90 on special at Dan Murphy's (as was the 98' Koonunga Hill - also a good wine).

I soon regretted not buying more, so got a case through auction in 2001/2 for $13 + commission = $15approx. I have just finished that case and again.....regret not buying more. While it is now $22 all up, I still think it is worth it.

I guess it just goes to show that if you like a wine, back your judgement and buy it, regarless of the price. I am currently loving the 2001 St Hallet Blackwell Shiraz, and at arount $24 should take my own advice and buy a case.

Cheers

Andy
