Glass door on wine room...?

Hi all,

I am building an internal wine room into my new house extension and am trying to decide whether to use a glass door. I would like to, but I don't want to let too much UV light into the wine room.

Are there any good options to reduce the impact of light. E.g. Using tinted glass, or using a certain type of glass, etc

The door will not get any direct sunlight or fluorescent light. The are no windows in the walls of the adjacent room, but there is a skylight.

Thanks for your help,

Cheers,
Chris

Um

Why not ask a glass supplier? No doubt there is

I think you can get glass tinting that blocks out almost all UV whilst only blocking a small amount of light. Something like:

More importantly have you considered the amount of heat gained through the glass and how much that will affect your electricity bill? You'd better at least double glaze, although still nowhere near as effective as a solid, refrigeration-quality insulated door.

Hi cadnams,

If I were you, I would let go of the glass door idear and use a well fitted solid door with good seals.
You probably want to show off the cellar, but the best result for the wines is to keep them in the dark and forget about them.
This will also reduce your cooling as a lot is lost through the glass unless you double glaze and argon fill it.

If you really want to, there are a lot of glass options out there.
As craig said, ask a professional, ask your glazier.

Cheers,
Smurf

Look at a glass called Comfort Plus. We have it in every window in our house and it cuts down heat transfer, noise and 99% of UV and it was only a bit more expensive than normal glass. It is a laminated glass and you can get it in a variety of colours or clear (I think).

I know someone who has a glass door on his wine room. Double glazed and tinted.

Watch out for the door fogging up at times.

Thanks everyone.

You've all got me thinking about this, and I think I will stick with a solid door. Whilst the cellar is in the house I will be the only one who ever sees it (it's not on display). The aesthetics are less important than the quality of the storage environment so I will just avoid the glass.
