Fault/Taint - Penfolds Reserve 06 Chardonnay

We opened the above bottle (screwcap) on Saturday night. It had been in the wine fridge since purchased 2-3 years ago from one of the supermarket chains.

Opened it up and it had a really wooden and vegetal smell that permeated the palate. It was not nice at all. The next day, the nose was more like rotten vegetable. Can anyone pinpoint this fault? Disappointed as I paid about $70 for this. Still have about half the bottle left.

Would you say Cauliflower/Garlic when you say rotten fruit ? Mercaptan.

Thanks for the quick response.

I will check later. There definitely was deterioration in the odour over the 24 hours.

Hi Reschsmooth.

I've been off the last couple days on my quest to become an Ironman (made it in 12:43 :D :D ).

Have you contacted my team to get it fixed up? 1300 651 650

I spoke with Moira who organised for a box and reply envelope with which I can send the remains of the content to TWE for analysis. The bottle is sitting on my staff's desk waiting for dispatch. I will update once I hear back from TWE. I must say I am more than impressed (although not sure what the standardised unit of measurement for impression is apart from PSI or similar) with Moira's attention thus far.
