Not good at doing tasting notes.... just an impression of an unusual wine that I picked up from a bottleshop in Melbourne: 'At Odd' 2001 Clare Valey Shiraz (Cleanskin). This one is a real bargain.
Bold, loads of very ripe sweet fruit, with 14% alchohol all soaked into it. First hour after decanting was unexciting and had a slight greeness to it, but my interests started thereafter. I drank it over 2 days, and it evolves through various come-and-go nuances. Didn't improve much on the 2nd day, just rounder. Sometimes the lifted alchohol seemed obvious, but most time not. Once some herb nuances emerged too but that didn't last long. All the time it was smooth, smelt and tasted of sweet vanilla, chocolatey, and had nice tannin. It will keep but I won't bother, it tastes great now. The wine wasn't terribly complex, but was 'very complex', great value and unusual for $6. "Real bargain" are unfortunate words for describing it, because it is a very good wine for the price, drinking straight or with rare steak.
