<b>1979 Deutz Cuvée William Deutz</b>
Light gold, with vestiges of yellow. Brilliant nose – youthful, toasty, but incredibly creamy and “fluffy” – hints of apples, vanilla, warm baked bread. Still relatively undeveloped considering its 25-year age! Palate is still surprisingly youthful. Lovely integration, harmony and balance. Extraordinary length. Concentrated and full-bodied, reflecting the bouquet. An almost faultless wine. Astonishing 4mm mousse in glass for ten minutes. In the flute, very fine 1mm bubbles. <b>Grand Vin! 19.0 / 20</b>

<b>1979 Salon “S” Blanc de Blancs (Le Mesnil)</b>
Deep golden tinges. Excellent condition. Nose is refined but with a full spectrum. Avalanche of cutting acidity predominates. Palate is clearly a class act – lovely balance. Top length. Some earthy complexity but nonetheless quite subtle with no over-the-top yeastiness or mushrooms. In fact, again, quite youthful. Surprisingly not as dry as I expected with a hint of subtle honey sweetness. Bubbles kept rollicking along for over an hour (relatively large in size compared to the Deutz). Full of life still but fully mature and a notch below great. <b>Excellent 18.5 / 20</b>

Isn't that interesting... I looked up my notes and found that I've drunk the 1979 Cuvée William Deutz at our Club Dinner, January 1994 with my good buddy David who brought the Ruinart Blanc de Blanc 1982 along. I noted that the Deutz was AWESOME, especially considering that I fished it out of a bargain bin at DJ in Bondi Junction. Staff must have thought that the Champagne gone off because the AU $104 pricetag was crossed out and discunted to $20. The capsule was torn too but I didn't care, this was the best buy ever.
Good to see that the great wine is still going!

Similar thing to me - Back when I was working in a Gordon bottle shop c1989 when at Uni I picked this up for $40. At the time, I also picked up two bottles of the even better still and mis-priced 79 Lanson Noble at $40 each less a 25% staff discount (I recently posted a TN on it).

Strangely I have not come across Deutz wines very often at all in Australia, especially the William, since that time.
