As I have been a person who has been sitting on the sideline for the last year or so, I have enjoyed the discussions and gained a wonderfull insight of the world of wine. I have been monitoring this thread, being one of the 200 viewers waiting for someone to contribute.... As I missed Wynsday due to work commitments, I was fortunate to taste the leftovers on Saturday afternoon. So it is my turn to step up to the plate and finally contribute, although for my virgin post I will keep it simple, especially since I was not anticipating posting a reply. I just tasted the wines, and picked out the ones I enjoyed. As stated, most of the wines tasted had been opened for three days and stored at room temperature :
Starting at the top:
My choice of the Day was:
Michael Shiraz 2008: Great Dark Colour, wonderfully balanced and great length. Med to full bodied, a classy shiraz, and one of the best shirazs I have tasted in a while. Unfortunately the store had sold out of its allocation, however I will be tracking it down and purchasing a couple. Well worth the money.
John Riddoch Cab Sav 2008:
Once again a well balanced wine, however after three days opened it still seemed closed. It was still a top quality wine, and hard to fault, I am sure if you are after a long term cellaring Coonawarra Cab this will be worth considering. Other people tasting with me thought it was the best of the Wynns.
Davis Cab Sav 2008Very similar to the John Riddoch, but almost half the price. If you are after a wine for the medium term, or now, this is worth considering. Once again sold out.
V&A Lane Shiraz 2009As most of the Wynns allocation had been sold out, this was still left, so I purchased a couple of bottles. Typical Coonawarra Shiraz, Med to full bodied, well balanced oak and moderate length and complexity. This wine, and along above mentioned wines, the fruit was picked in its prime; Not green yet not over-ripe or jammy.
V&A Lane Cab ShirazAs I am not a huge fan of this blend, but still keeping an open mind, this wine did not grab my attention, and I much preferred the abovementioned wines, hence no further descriptors. The wine was good, but there were better wines for me.
"Black label Cab Sav 2009This wine had been opened on the day, so it may have been at a disadvantage compared to the wines mentioned. I found it to be completely out of balance, and not integrated. At varying stages you could taste Oak, then some fruit, and then oak. It appeared to be very clumsy, and despite the discounted price, I did not consider purchasing.
Disclaimer; I have tasted/collected this wine from 1999 vintage tol the 2005 vintage, and although enjoyable I have not been a big fan of the wine.
Reisling 2009Enjoyable, citrus, minerality, a good mid week quaffer, being lower in alcohol.
Chardonnay 2010Forgettable...even as a cheaper quaffer.
Hopefully this post is of some use, and my next one won't take as long to construct... Happy drinking
