Need to start drinking up some older wine.

2001 Classic McLaren La Testa Shiraz - a little porty with blueberries, coffee. Rich and mouthfilling but starting to tip over I feel. This wont make old bones and start drinking up based on this bottle. Good.

2001 Jim Barry Riesling - Under screwcap. In a nice place. Yellow gold. Toasty lime with good palate weight. Lipsmacking finish that lingers. Excellent.

2001 Leasingham Bin 7 Riesling - Under Screwcap. This was a lot younger with some spritz and a lot paler in hue. Lean and still slightly mean on the palate. Should go for another decade I reckon. Good with potential.

1998 Wynns Black Label Cabernet - corked

I should probably change my log in now that the floods are behind us but I have been drinking my way through some of the flood damaged stcok I retrieved from Kennards and the wine I had tonight just blew me away. 2006 Samuels Gorge Shiraz.

I have had a few 2006 shiraz from the Vale as it was one of my first winery visit trips and you end up buying something from everyone. I have tried plenty since but this really impressed me. Sweet fruit, intregated oak, not a long finish but the quality and accessibility excellent. A great surprise, thanks Justin!

Petaluma Riesling 2002 under screwcap, just gorgeous, light on its feet, rounded but still zippy acidity glorious honeyed notes interwoven with lime and lemon, going on for ever! Just magical. Almost a waste midweek! No hurry here I don't think but just delightful right now! Heady, intoxicating (well obviously! ). Have some of these under cork too so the comparison will be interesting.

The last few bottles of the La Testa Shiraz I have had from 2001 have been past their prime. You were lucky to get one which was still OK.

Bad luck with the 98 Wynns. I had a lovely bottle of it on Tuesday, absolutely perfect, hard imagine that is going to get any better, just right.

Not sure that I have had enough experience to say but compared to other 2006 I have had I was surpsrised how well this came together. I am reluctant to say it is developed as it may just be a better quality than the others. I don't think it will fall over in a hurry and I plan to keep my other bottles for a while but to my taste it is drinking beautifully.

I'd hardly call 2001 wines old. They're barely 10 years old, especially for Rieslings and Cabernets. I don't know much about the La Testa but the others are good wines and should be able to age considerably longer.

I have a bottle of the 2000 Bin 7 and the 1998 Black Label and I won't be opening them anytime soon. Of course you did say that the Bin 7 would go longer and a corked wine doesn't count.

Jacob's Creek Reserve Shiraz 2003 (SA)... Incredible crust deposited, leaving the wine still quite purple-red and generally hazy. Best described as having been cooked: extremely sweet, porty nose. Must have been simply over the top young, aging has not done anything for it.

Kirihill Shiraz 2009 (Clare Valley)... available at the chains for simplly a song. This is rich and ripe, with saturated plums and sweet purple fruit on the palate. Drinking well now in a ripe-shiraz mold, but has the bones to go medium term in the cellar.

Thanks. The cellar is passive back in Sydney so I worry about the conditions. Sounds like the La Testa is typical. A shame as there are a few left. Interesting that you don't see the 98 Wynns not making old bones. I'll have to check a second bottle.

I'm stunned by your experiences with the La Testa's. I drink one, two or three times a week and never had any of them even look like they're off. But given that, I haven't had many of the 01 shiraz's - mostly 00 and 03 blends and 99, 00 and 02 cabs and shiraz's, 99 merlots and 01 grenaches. Often I'll even drink half and still enjoy the second half the following night. What are your cellaring conditions like or what was the provenance of your bottles? I heard some of the pallets were not stored well after the place went belly up.
