TN: 2009 Coates Tenison Vineyard Pinot Noir

Post by n4sir »

2009 Coates Tenison Vineyard Pinot Noir, Robe (screwcap): Light garnet. Bright cherries, cranberry and mushroom with a definite whiff of something volatile there too, at first it was nail polish (EA) but with more air it's varnish (VA). The palate's lightweight but grippy and a little milky, the cherry fruit tempered by spicy oak before a tangy mid-palate, finishing with very good length. Decent drinking now, but not a cellaring prospect.

Cheers,
Ian

Hi Ian,

Great to find an old note for this wine that doesn't have much out there for reference!
Tonight is second night on this, but it is pretty much exactly how it was upon opening last night
Nose and palate profile very similar to what you described above but I am finding very little of the nail polish or varnish, maybe in the very distant background but very very subtle.
bought with a guaranteed provenance stamp it exhibited all the characteristics of an impeccably stored bottle, the fruit was fresh, the silky tannins, acid and oak all just complimenting each other to form a lovely, smooth and very balanced wine.
I could only find one vintage of this Pinot on CT, and very little information on any other Pinot they have produced. Nevertheless, a well made wine IMO. Sad if they never kept going.

Duane Coates' Pinot Noir is still being made, although it is sourced from the Adelaide Hills in 2010 and 2012 instead of Robe. I think 2012 is still the current vintage on his website. Tasting notes below:
