Sorry for the late notice but I'm hosting a trade tasting for the 11 Burgundy producers I currently stock in Australia and will be hosting a dinner afterwards this Wednesday at Fix St James in the Sydney CBD.

$99 gets you five or six hearty courses and 14 wines:

It's likely there will be one wine on arrival, then two flights of three whites, two flights of three reds and then dessert/cheese.

Pretty good value I would think and a good opportunity to check out a great bistro and a range of lovely wines you've probably never tried before.

But you'll need to be quick!

Just a brief report on this event, kindly arranged by Neville.

Before getting on to just a few of the highlights in the wine department for me, I should say that all of the food was excellent, and I enjoyed the company.

The wines were well thought out, as was the order in which they were served. A few stood out for me, and I've just dealt with them.

First, the Benoit Ente Puligny Montrachet 2007, served first, on its own - a terrific wine, full of character and a bit idiosyncratic. Smoky bacon on the nose, excellent acidity and phenomenal length, with the fruit keeping it all in balance.

Second, for me, Frederic Gueguen Chablis 1er cru L'Homme Mort 2007 - another lovely wine, full of character, with an attractive, floral nose, and again with excellent fruit with lively acidity. This was my favourite of a flight of three, the others being the Thierry Matrot St Aubin 1er Cru Fleurs de Coteaux 2004 (second favourite), and the Gambal St Aubin 1er Cru Murgers des Dents de Chien 06 (bringing up the rear).

THe third flight were all worthy, lighter styled burgundies. OF these, I liked the Aurelien Verdet Vosne Romanee 2007 - this was a very pure example of pinot, I thought, with a classic pinot nose, and delicate but firmly structured on the palate.

Next in this flight was the Domaine dex Croix Beaune 1er Cru Pertuisots 2006. My notes were starting to denegerate at this point, and I was confined to observing that it had a long finish. Finally in this flight, the Dupont-Tisserandot Gevrey Chambertin Veilles Vignes 2007 - which was let down by its not particularly expressive nose.

The final flight were heavy hitters, and frustrating difficult to pin down - every ten minutes, their noses and their characters appeared to have completely changed. I will not try to describe them, except to say that they were always expressive, and each one of them mercurial.

Ultimately, of the three, I decided that the Camille Giroud Corton Le Clos du Roi Grand Cru 2006 was my wine of the night.

The other two, Dupont-Tisserandot Charmes Chambertin Grand Cru 2007 and Humbert Freres Gevrey Chambertin 1er Cru Le Poissenot 2007 were also excellent wines, and, in terms of the red, would have been second and fourth (the Aurelien probably pipping it for third, just because it was such pure expression of pinot).
