Just about every time I pour a glass of red, it takes about 1 minute before the vinegar flies are hovering. And if I am not careful, another minute before they are in the wine, and it does not take too long before the wine is spoiled. I hate the damn things.
I normally use a Henri Wintermans metal cigar box to cover the glass, from my smoking days. (3 years yesterday since my last)
Others use cigarette packets, hankies, paper, beer coasters etc.
It drives me mad, and its constant.
I have never seen a wine glass with a cover. I have been thinking about it, but dont know how it would work. It could not be hinged. I use riedels.
How does everybody deal with these retched things?

They are bad this year...its the seasonal summer rains thing. They die after the first few frosts. OPen the place up and freeze their little wings off for a few days and you'll see the numbers drop off dramatically.

It's never been a problem in Canberra, at least in our part of town.

Try a decoy jar or glass with a good splosh of some horrid wine in the bottom with a few drops of detergent to break the surface tension.

Cover the top with a couple of layers of gladwrap and stab a few holes in the top so the little buggers can get in. Stand back and watch them drown

If you don't have any horrid wine at hand, try fruit juice with a small splash of vinegar to turn it sour.

A similar industrial size fly drowning trap near the compost or worm farm will help.

Oh, and don't forget to inspect your fruit bowl for mouldy oranges, forgotten bananas and the like. Check behind the couch for the same if you have small children..
