***** is raving the 2002 (best McLarenVale Vintage EVER!) Dowie Doole Reserve Shiraz, 98 points, $39.99 / $456 case . I never got to try the 2001 Reserve, so don't know what to expect here.

On closer look at the site, the DD Reserve Shiraz from the "lesser" 2001 vintage scored 99 points and rated a longer cellaring period. Oops. At least the 2002 is the same price.

Anybody tried either the 2001 or 2002?

I had a chance to try the 2001, and it was very impressive. Here are my notes, which in retrospect were a bit conservative. I have no idea, though, how the 2002 will be.

Wonderful black/violet color, with great density. Fairly spectacular aromatics of violets, dark chocolate, licorice
and black raspberries. Similar, very complex flavors with one of the most distinctive and powerful floral
components I've ever experienced. Long, interesting finish of licorice, flowers, and almond wood. I could
see someone giving this an upper 90's score, the floral component is just a bit much for me. (93+)

I like Brian Lights winemaking style, and he makes Dowie Doole.

My comment is that after seeing the mailer, I made other enquiries, and there is a very small amount available, but I managed to get a dozen at
$29 each . it pays to shop around.

The 2002 I will be stocking, tiny quantities only, but unfortunately I've not tried the wine, and would not receive a sample, so buying, and selling, on spec a bit here.

The 2001 was very good indeed, expect the 2002 to be better, but again, not tried.

Tried several different bottles of the 2001 Dowie Doole Reserve Shiraz and there was significant variation. One bottle was absolutely fantastic..!!

Have not tried the 2002.
