What are you drinking? I just cracked consecutive years d'Arenberg 94,95,96 - magpie shiraz viognier. Very nice set.

Tollana Riesling 1994 - honey, toast and quite developed sweet but still fresh.

LEAS Chardonnay 2005 - luscious, full bodied wine with all the bells and whistles. Super.

Petaluma Coonawarra 1999 - Bordeaux style - lead pencil, fine oak, a touch of mint, really good and drinking well. Still good time on the clock.

Fittingly all Aussie classics in their own way.

Yes I was wondering that too. Did they even make it back then and if they did I'd be surprised it lasted.

Teusner Salsa Rose 2008 on a wet, warm (29C) and humid (95% @ 3.00pm) day. I think it's a little more fruity than the Teusner Cleanskin Rose 2009 I shared on Saturday night but the intended style is evident in both for me. The Salsa has been very pleasant sipping while the cricket's been on in the background. Opened it at about 11.30am, still have a few sips left in the last glass.

Also poured a bottle of Teusner Dog Strangler Mataro 2008 into the old water carafe about half an hour ago to try with dinner later. It's about to be released DaveB has advised and there's also a shiraz/mataro blend on the way; info for those who haven't recently checked the shiraz/mataro thread.

What better to open on Australia day than a true Aussie classic - the 1996 Penfolds Bin 389. Not a great deal to add to the multitude of other notes that appear on this wine, lovely Cabernet Shiraz, that even at 14 years of age needs some breathing to come up trumps, and when it does shows both the Cabernet and Shiraz varietals in its makeup. In great shape despite questionable cellaring in its early life, and should now live on its plateau for a long time.

Yes it is stupid hot in Brisbane, but an airconditioner helps enormously.

Tonight a (partially refrigerated) Aussie classic. 1996 Leasingham Bin 56 Clare Valley Cabernet Malbec. Not hitting its straps yet tonight (and I have had better bottles), but there is some good dark plum fruit there and a hint of mint on the finish.

Shame about Leasingham really .....

2002 RBJ Theologicum Mataro
This was the reserve bottling of straight Mataro. Spicebox and leather with that musk and floral notes of great Barossan mataro. Yum! Savoury palate that has earth mixed in. Finishes hot unfortunately with some fine acid and tannin tightening the cheeks. 16% doesn't help. Still a Very Good wine and dinkum Aussie

Sons of Eden 2007 Kennedy GSM: (served with lamb -what else-) Aromas of ripe blackcurrents and plums. A nice and smooth complex palate, displaying layers of ripe berry and plum flavour with velvety tannins, together with good length and depth....1 left, need more....easy to drink, even on a warm day down in freo....
