I note this wine won five trophies at the Sydney Show. Is anyone familiar with the label, or is it a first release ?

If I'm not mistaken this is the one with the white label? Formerly Chateau Reynella. If so, I have tried:

Cab 1995: Still could do with some time on the shelf, quite a hard wine when tasted 2 yrs ago and needed to settle down, but all in all not that well balanced. Some may like it simply because it is so huge (like them all)

Cab 1997: Fabulous wine, once again needing time but showing a riper side with lots of liqourice, chocolate and some minty stuff going on (if memory serves). Gets better with breathing.

Shiraz 1998: Huge and way to early to be drinking. Can't remember what the profile of this one is ("and I wasn't even drunk") but I do remember I liked it enough to buy 6.

Sorry haven't tried the 98 Cab but by all accounts it would follow the great vintage, was released after the '99, and I believe Steven Pannell (Spelling?) was winemaker, so what can you say but: YUM

The latest release of the Shiraz seems to have a mass of medals on it's side but I haven't really looked at where they are from. Could be from Penant Hills Beer Barbie Guzzlers Committee as far as I know.

If it is the Chateau Reynella CabSav I am thinking of, it has a long pedigree and dates back decades. I have some tasting notes dating back to the 60's and 70's of this wine (not mine of course, I am too young ).

Released later this year I believe, shopuld be $50 ish pb

Is this the 'Basket Pressed' one with a white label with verticle writing ie readable when the bottle is lying flat? If so it has been out a couple of years.

We get Chateau Reynella exported from Auz every year. It appears that you get it bottled in a slightly different name.

Here is a tasting note from a release next week:

87 Chateau Reynella 1997 Basket Pressed Cabernet Merlot * 1/2
Mclaren Vale, South Australia
This wine has matured considerably since we last tasted it in 2001. The nose displays some greenness surrounding the blackberry/cassis fruit with roasted coffee and oak, plus leathery notes for added complexity. Full bodied, round ripe jammy fruit flavours on the palate reveal still massive assertive tannins on the finish. Very good length. This should be drunk soon since the fruit will surely soon fade and there is little sign of softening tannins. Best 2004. ON Vintages Feb 21/04 $29.95 (STh 01/04)

Saw wine at the Sydney Show tasting and dinner last Friday. Huge Mclaren Vale style, with chocolate and blackberry. Way too young to approach at this stage. Not yet released, but expected late 2004
