Have some friends going to hobart next week and they've asked me for some advice on which wineries to visit. I've given them a few names based on wines that I have tasted, but was wondering if people who have actually been to the cellar doors down there would have some recommendations based on both the wine and friendliness of the cellar door.

Moorilla is worth it for the winery itself.
Derwent Estatesmall cellar door, but worth a look
Lubianasmalll cellar door again worth the look and may get a impromptu tour. Good range Pinot Rieslings consistent.
Home HillGreat winnery Huonville way, Pinot has been winning everything but is in the mulberry spectrum which I don't fancy, consistently good.
There are quite a few in the Coal River Area which are good, not all may be open : Frogmore Pooley plus quite a few others which are good but escape me at the moment, all very close.
Bream Creek is on the way to Port Arthur at a place called the potters Croft. You could drive past the vineyard but there is nothing there except the view.

I agree with the previous suggestion but I would also recommend that your friends take the road to Richmond - a historical village and worth visiting in it's own right. The Coal Valley region has a number of great vineyards. A lot of them are concentrated along Richmond road which runs from a small place called Cambridge (about 10 mins from the city and easy to find) and Richmond.

The first one is the Coal Valley Vineyard which amongst other things has a nice cab merlot. Up the road is Meadowbank vineyard nice range but they also have a restaurant that's pricey but pretty good. Across the side road is a place called Frogmore Creek and their range is consistently good and regularly wins awards but I think they are in the process of setting up a cellar door - best to ring first the number will be in the Wine route booklet that you can pick up from the airport or other places where tourism brochures can be found.

Further along the road toward Richmond is Puddleduck which is a small family owned vineyard that has a nice riesling, rose and pinot as well as some good sparkling. Just outside Richmond is Pooley's. The cellar door is in a wonderful Georgian outbuilding. Again family run and has a pretty good range.

There are others but not sure of the opening times. If Craigow is open it is definately worth a visit.

I believe Craigow are only open by appointment these days. Still worth ringing them.
All the others on the Cambridge-Richmond road are open normal (10-4 min) hours.*
Go through Richmond to Domaine A - Tasmania's best reds, more or less. They're out of white wine, and didn't charge their usual tasting fee when I was there on Monday.

*A lie, actually. I think that Frogmore/Hood/Wellington (opposite Meadowbank) are only open weekends.
