What are drinking with what for Xmas Day/Night?

Post by Luke W »

I usually save something special for Xmas day/night. It seems the only time my ungrateful children all sit down with me and eat is on Xmas day and that's usually because we have a tepponyaki BBQ at the table and chuck on masses of marinated meats/seafood and vegies (in other words if they don't sit down they miss out)!

Anyway excusing my lack of domestic harmony, I usually start out with a sparkling/champagne around 9am and then follow it up with a good white/red with the tepponyaki. If there's any stamina left maybe another at dinner or just a couple of premium beers.

This year I've lined up the following: 1996 Dom Perignon or a 2002 Chandon Vintage Brut (because I've lined up the DP before and chickened out)
1999 East Arm riesling or a 2002 Toolangi reserve chardy
1991 Wynns Black Label cab sav or a 1997 Eileen Hardy shiraz

So team what are you planning?

Have a great Xmas

Luke

Luke, you don't necessarily need an ocassion for this wine. When you open it, it becomes the event...

Doesn't look like any serious wine dinners for Christmas this year, so I think it will be easy going stuff for the festivities.

Thoughts include:
- oodles of Wirra Moscato
- some dependable rieslings eg. Leo Buring, Petaluma, Helm
- a few delectable pinots eg. Hoddles, Kooyong
- a smattering of aged mid range reds eg. Penfolds Bins, Taltarni, Seppelt Chalambar, Wynns Cab Sav
- slabs and slabs of Cooper's Red and Green

Cheers,

Monghead.

Hahaha

Over the Christmas period, so Christmas eve to Boxing day...

Unlike in Adelaide, where this would be the list for a party of 4 in one sitting  , we here in Syd-e-ney prefer a more civilised pace, where the inebriation sets in slower, but lingers days longer...

Cheers,

Monghead.

Because of the numbers involved, it's going to be simple stuff;

I've got a few Guy Bossard Muscadets, and some Paringa Estate Peninsula Pinot 2007. I would have preferred to get hold of some Williams Crossing (Curly Flat 2nd Label) Pinot, but not sure where to get it... Either way, both will be an excellent choice with the somewhat eclectic dinner we're having

Nothing big planned for Christmas... just good food, great company, and cheap-ish drops...

Here's my ear-marked list:
- Two Hands "Brilliant Disguise" Moscato
- an italian Moscato (can't remember name, bought from a certain "big box" liqour chain)
- Hardys Siegersdorf Riesling
- Dopff au moulin Riesling
- Pepperjack Shiraz
- Torzi Matthews "Schist Rock" Shiraz
- Brown Brothers Orange Muscat & Flora

Probably won't drink all of them anyway... perhaps 2-3 of above! 8)
Gosh... all this talk is making me thirsty!

Well this has probably been the quietest year of drinking vino to date since I started my relationship with fermented grapes (due to not drinking much at home and instead spending time with my son). So the festive season should hopefully see a few hidden gems coming out of the cellar.

The other good news is I’m spending it in Melbourne where the bargains shops are plenty, so might go hunting whilst I’m there. So it is impossible to say at this stage but am likely to pull out and try a 2002 St Henri which I have many of but not tried in while (I know it is still hibernating but they keep staring at me when I’m close by).

Look forward to hopefully speaking of some classics I had on the night.

Happy and Safe Chrissy to all

Sam

I'll be with the in-laws in Perth so once again I'll be taking a couple of things over in an attempt to game some of the family into raiding the good gear. That said even the combination of a 98 Wendouree and my forthcoming wedding to their youngest daughter wasn't enough to spring a Grange from the cellar so maybe I'm wasting my time.

Might take a 2001 Heytesbury Cabernet and see where that gets me.

Maybe marrying his daughter was a reason to keep the Grange in the cellar..?

My inlaws, before they met me, used to send me a case of good aus wine from Berry Bros & Rudd (posh London bottle shop). Since they've met me the wine has suspiciously stopped...

For me, well the weather will play a big part of it on the day, if it's a stinker here in Perth, the
reds will take a back step, although the sparky red will play a prominant roll on the day (no matter
how hot it gets!), including Majella 2005, Oomoo 2004 and Peter Rumball NV. A couple of Rizza's will
be in thier, probably a Petaluma 2002 and maybe a Leo Buring 2003 or Richmind Grove 2002, a Chardy
from MR, possibly a Devil's lair 2006 or Chalice bridge 2005. Deen De Bortoli 2006 vat 6? Botrytis Semillon.

...and Fat Yak Pale Ale..........

Will depend a bit how hot it is but Tattinger NV to start, some spatlese styled riesling, some carrick/julicher pinot and if its not too hot a big bad aussie shiraz/ cabernet of some description to go with the thick cut bbq scotch. then thoughts that my next big race is only a month away will see me move onto sparkling water

So you reckon that if I divorce her the vintage Krug corks will be popping? Not sure I'd be invited to partake, however...

Haven't quite thought it all through yet - you can't rush these things - however I've chucked some NV Moet & Chandon in the fridge as the rellies recognise it and seem to be impressed and happy by its appearance.

Also an 06 disgorgement Joseph sparkling red.

And I might try a Mac Forbes riesling I think, assuming the weather is warm.

And I'll probably have another bottle of the 04 Leasingham Magnus sparkling shiraz. I've been searching high and low for more of this so if anyone spots some in Sydney, can you let me know. Seems to have sold out online.
Cheers,
Kris

Voyager Estate 2007 Chardonnay with lunch and Browns Brothers NV Sparkling in the arvo.
Probably then move onto a few James Squires. Have a good one all. :D

Not sure about on the actual day. I've lined some stuff up for when my sister arrives on the 29th and onwards though. Have a 2004 Bonneau du Martray Corton-Charlemagne Grand Cry, and the current vintages of Bindi Original Vineyard Pinot Noir and Eileen Hardy Shiraz.

Hi all, spending christmas with the inlaws over in Norway this year, have forgoten how bloody cold it get's. Any way for chrissy eve which is when we celabrate here there is no wine, we just drink lots of aquavit which is like rocket fuel and beer, I was going to try to sneek a couple of sparkling reds along which i bought over, but i dont like my chances as my inlaws hate to break tradition. Any way cheers for christmas and the new year.

I've made my decisions, and packed the wine to take to the in-laws; spread over Xmas day and Boxing day and maybe the next day, see how we go:

NV Deutz Methode Tradionelle
05 Pirathon Shiraz (always a crowd pleaser)
08 Te Mata Elston Chardonnay
07 Craggy Range Sophia (really looking forward to this one, will have to ensure I get at least two generous glasses)
07 Pegasus Bay Riesling
Cheers,
Mike
