Decanted for a hour or so before hand and served blind. Easily picked as a Barossa shiraz.
The nose was quite dominated with blackfruits and a hint of smoke and coffee.
A medium mouthfeel and richness but with lots of juicy blackberry some chocolate and coffee (a hint of something that I would describe as graphite) and a nice soft finish.

I had this yesterday and agree with your notes, fruit wise. I found the descriptors you mention but there was a huge amount of oak which almost ruined the wine for me.
Did you find it woody?
The wine was initially a little warm when served, which I thought maybe the problem, but didnt improve after a time in the fridge.

Am I an oakophobe or is Elderton always like this? Dud Bottle? TCA?
Any thoughts?

I did not not notice it in any great amounts although I'am very tolerant of oak.

Others who drank the wine commented that it was a very typical Elderton Shiraz and would pass muster with the Elderton fans.

Are there any other wines that you could name where the oak is too much ?

The last large OTT oak experience I had was a 97 bin 407 but that I put down to mild TCA. It was a bit hollow and really lacked fruit, although no noticable mustiness. The Elderton was a lot better than that, but felt/tasted familiar (in structure I suppose) especially on the back palate/finiish.

Maybe I'm dreaming
