Red Edge, Keith Tulloch, Mitolo, Two Hands and Shadowfax

Post by Jamie Goode »

Tried some new wines yesterday. I'd be interested to know the views of you knowledgeable folk about the following producers.

1. Mitolo - simply stunning, ripe expressive wines. A superb line up. Am I wrong?

2. Shadowfax - lots of ambition here and the new Heathcote reds seem to be hitting the mark. Very classy all round.

3. Keith Tulloch wines - I was surprised to see quite how high James Halliday rated these. They are unusual, quite quirky and old fashioned reds (I'd love to see the 4EP levels of the top shiraz in 2001), whites simple and fruity. Cheap, tacky plastic capsules don't help the image, either.

4. Two hands - taking the super-ripe, sweet fruit style to an extreme? Lots of concentration and sweetness of fruit makes these tasty and immediate in their impact, but are they unbalanced?

5. Red Edge - small production wines from Heathcote, lots of character. What do people think of them? I'd like to know.
best regards

Hi Jamie

Red Edge was a discovery for me a few years ago. A good Heathcote shiraz and the cabernet a big but interesting beast.

Stopped buying a few years ago due scarcity and the price hike that brings. Felt there would be a similar Heathcote winery to be "discovered" but none eventuated.

I think MartinC is versed on the recent vintages.

Jamie,

I took Robin Garr to Shadowfax when he visited last year. I think the Shadowfax is improving year on year. The Heathcote Range are showing very high class.

My report on the trip has been archived on theWLDG.

Hello

Mitolo and Shadowfax, agree 100%.

The Shadowfax lineup is good all the way down the line, the Heathcotes are stunning, but the whites are excellent, good vineyard sources, plus good wine making, a label to watch!

Mitolo also, higher price bracket and their own style, but very good indeed. Love the style of the interesting Serpico, the Savitar and GAM are excellent McLaren Vale wines of high class, and the Reiver, in 2002, a very good Barossa Shiraz (was a little less impressed with 2001).

Two Hands I've not seen for 12-18 months or so, so comments withheld.

RedEdge is terrific and alas...how I wish Mr.Dredge would invest in new barrels.
