Yong at wine taste. pls give comments.

1st day=no breathing
Smell: upon open, lots of young fruity aroma-berries like. Upon swirl, more vanilla + a bit oak smell . very little oak though.

Palate: fruity & a bit acid, however a bit of tanin comes back. a bit of alcoholic hotness. medium body wine (not as thick as the yellow label I think) -easy drinking but lack depth.

aftertaste: short

Overall - light to medium body fruity wine, not as good as expected-no way near a 389 as some comments claimed. The lack of tanin gives the wine little no structure. If Yellow Label (the 2nd day with enough breathe) shiraz had been rated 81/100. This one should be a bit lower 79/100.

1 hour later ( 1/3 gone with screwd cap on)
Smell: getting more complex, a bit sweetness. The fragrant improved a lot after the 1st hour=it starts to smell like 389.
Palate: The oak seems come back-more balanced. the wine Seems have awakened but again no way near a 389 taste in my memory.
Overall - still medium body- fragrant improved as breathe longer. It just don't like that it has spend 20 months in used barrels in aging as said in the website - there are many many others whom spend just 5-9 months in barrel that displays much more oak than this KH SC.

5 hour later (1/2 gone with screwed cap on)
Smell; initally still lots of blackcurrent; smell fruity & good but the aroma disappear fairly quickly in glass even with heavy swirl.
Palate; sounds a bit like 389 with rather 1 dimension taste-still oak prescence is not much & aftertaste a bit acidic. => the wine has peaked ??

Look forward to taste it on 2nd day to see if can improve or not. Stocked 6 at a px of AUD$8.67 per bottle on special price.

Welcome to the forum. Sounds like a very good review to me. I would love to know who said it was close to 389 though. I think there is a fair gap that you could fly a jumbo through :)

cheers

it was John #11 said "The Koonunga Hill 2007 Cab-Shiraz is definitely the one to stock up on. After the first bottle it tastes just like Bin 389"

Might that 389 comparison have been in reference to the "Seventy Six" Koonunga Hill, which sounds like it ought to be the same thing in a slightly different bottle but is actually a different wine from the basic Koonunga Hill? Just a thought - the seventy six has generally got much more favourable write-ups.

The 389 reference was surely a joke wasn't it? That's how I read it...

That's the first thing I thought of too. I think the 'seventy six' is only available from the cellar door if I remember rightly.

the 76 KN is available..

the 76 KH is available here in HK for AUD$28.6; is it a good px ; what is the sales px in Australia?

At that px point AUD$28-30; what else will you recommend (I would say about 60% of all the labels are availble in HK only).

for 2 lables that I want to buy; what are the opinions of Penfolds 407 (AUD$36.5) vs Wolf Blass Grey Label CS (AUD$40.3), assume both are 2006 vintage (edited) ?

The 76 KH is limited availability so if you're keen to try it that's probably not a terrible price. That said, I think most people on here have been talking more in terms of A$20 and slightly under, which is certainly what I paid for mine.

The most recent release of the Bin 407 is the 2006 and while it's always a matter of personal taste of course I think the consensus of TNs I've seen on it (and my own opinion, for what that's worth) is that the 2006 389 is a much better wine. The caveat in this case is that the 407 does seem to be very much the poor relation of the bin range in terms of expert opinion so if you're a fan you might get a relative bargain.
