Although no veteran (!), I can confirm it was an excellent evening. There were some lovely wines, and the company was a good mix of "old hands" and newbies! I'm afraid my note taking reached a new low, as I was far two busy chatting away, but I will try harder next time. It was really good to get 16 of us there, and I think the group has great potential for the future. Maybe Pinot next time...

Hi All [from a hitherto absent veteran - by age!]
I have been snowed under by professional and family things since that great night.
The company and occasion are what I cherish most - more than lovely wines, even. As usual in my experience with dinners of wine enthusiasts, the bonhomie was immediate and effortless. The bond of wine was there including an unforced spirit and pleasure from sharing and from exploring new wines - even the 1 x 750ml tainted bottle! As an aging 'Grey Hair', I noticed the youth and vitality around the table. My thoughts included contemplation of what decades of pleasure lay in front of these passionate fans and collectors of premium wine.
Once more, thanks to Ben for the bonus Noble One, Sparky (Sommelier) and Cloth Ears (money collector) for volunteering their services. Spreading the load does keep everyone fresh.
On the wines... I thought the Chardonnays were exceptional - but bare in mind they were from the very top draw of pedigree, whereas some of us deliberately chose more modest Cabernets to gain a spectrum of experiences. Partly with PQR in mind, I was a strong fan of the Coldstream chardonnay, too. On the reds - ditto - I concur with the consensus praising the Mildara 2004 and the Penley 2000. The split between reds and whites worked well, as did the venue.
Shall we move onto ideas for the next dinner? I'll start a new thread.

Thought you typically avoided Chardonnay, or are you talking about the LEAS Cabernet?
I drink some Chardonnay (lots if you include Bdb champagne). That said, I''d choose riesling first if I had to drink white wine
