I think Greg is planning on bringing a Sami (Hoffman).

The Jack Mann and Gladstone sound interesting.

Yes Scotty me too...and management has given me a leave pass. Going to the cellar tomorrow, if I can't find the Underhill (know where the Riddochs are) will dig out a couple of other gems. If there is just six of us...no problems it will be a swim through with post match munchies at the Blue and White or NA burger bar.

With the 2 potential additions we will have 8 ppl which will be nice.

Fantastic Sam. No need for magnums as we have moved away from this format for this offline.
Just bring something that you think will be interesting to try.

Spent two hours looking for the YY Underhill..can not recall drinking it!!! Lost to the archives in a box somewhere.
Have the 03 JR, also may consider a couple of Victorian specials if I decide its a better way to go than a single magnum.

An intimate gathering with 7 of us (Lee and Greg, Mario, David, Scotty, Sam all the way from UK and France and great to meet you, and yours truly) at the lovely Cliche Exhibition in North Adelaide for an offline. Sorry to those who couldn’t get there, a great night of good food, lovely wine and lively banter. Thankfully, despite protest from some quarters for drinking lots of water and tipping out the odd discard, no hangover…hooray!!
My belief impressions as follows, hopefully captured the essence of an excellent range of wines:
Started with a 2015 LEAS Chardonnay, not had many of these but rich palate, a fraction oaky but wonderful fruit poking through, for a Riesling man, think this wine will develop beautifully.
Commenced the reds with two Sami Odi’s. Not previously having any of these wines before can see why they are a revelation. First up the little wine #8??...I believe a multi-vintage of 4 vintages and latest release. A wonderful Shiraz, classic Barossa great nose of fruits, spice, a little oak, on the palate simply superb, which initially felt medium weight but then took hold and really fleshed out, gentle drying tannins. Fantastic wine and one to seek out.
Sami Odi Dalwitz 2016, off a couple of rows from the Hoffman vineyard, apparently shared by Rockford, Torbreck and others. Can see why these wines are sought after, beautiful perfumed nose, fruits, meats, amazing depth on palate, lovely tannins, an absolute blockbuster that lingered like a lady walking off into the sunset smiling, an easy 20-year proposition…what a wine!!
Pelissero 2009 Barbaresco…corked!!
Rockford 2009 Rod and Spur, a 55/45 Shiraz Cabernet, just entering its drinking window at 10 years, lots to be said for this wine and the rifle range being as good as the BP. Great balance, boldness of the Shiraz tempered by the softness of the Cabernet. Medium weight on the palate, balanced with lovely lingering tannins, another 10+ easily.
Jasper Hill Emily’s 2009 Shiraz/Cabernet Franc. Probably the surprise wine of the night, simply all class. A real step up with amazing palate that initially draws you in with delicacy of fruits but fleshes out beautifully, a great wine just entering its drinking window, another 10 years easily…wonderful!
Standish 2010 The Schubert Theorem… a label on a bottle that I could not read, but really one could be blind and not be disadvantaged. Seductive on the nose giving little away, palate however was a powerhouse, meats, fruits, so lush, astounding mouth feel and tannins that gently faded away. Fabulous and a real treat as this is the first mature Standish that I have tried…another 15 years easily…as Simon Cowell is oft to say, “it’s a yes from me!”.
Wynns 2002 Black Label Cabernet, having had many of these over the journey felt that the wine was still in its primary phase, dark red in colour, nose of currants, black berry a touch of olive, brooding palate, dusky tannins, oak all absorbed by the fruit. Despite being under cork, (03 onwards screw-cap), it feels to me that this wine has eons left in the tank. At $17 on release, what’s not to love…great bottle!
Wynns 2003 John Riddoch (magnum), cork. Only opened 90 minutes before, but put in a decanter for a couple of hours at dinner. Inky black lovely floral nose, fruit driven, currants, berries but oak in the background. Very full on the palate, and yes, the wood is there, but the plushness of fruit dominated the palate. It was fascinating to have these two wines side by side, like dueling banjo’s, the BL initially in front, but off the long run, the JR just got the points. In magnum, will be drinking beautifully at 2040…if I am around.
Majella Malleea 2013, for such a young wine beautiful plush palate, not harsh at all, but to be honest a fraction jammy. Despite liking this very much with a lovely residual sweetness and being a fruit bomb, the jury was out in terms of it settling down and coming round. Still a lovely drink.
Houghton Jack Mann 2004 Cabernet, fabulous nose very fine palate, of all of the wines tonight. A twinge of sweetness, just lovely with drying tannins on the finish. Have not had one of these for a while, great wine indeed and continued to open up as the night went on.

A great range of Shiraz and Cabernet wines with a blend or three thrown in.

Theme went north, south, east and west?

Glad you guys had a great night !

Shame about the Pelissero. Not the purest take on Barbaresco but with time their Cru bottlings can show well to a broad audience. Sometimes it pays to take a seemingly corked Barolo and Barbaresco home and try the next day- but doubtful in the Peliserro style.

Thanks to David for keeping the night going depsite a few hiccups.
Great to meet Sam as well.
Thanks to the rest of the 'skeleton crew' for making an appearance and making it a really fun night.

took a few shots. discovered the corks in my jacket pocket next day so took some pics.
Got some more pics from the night I'll post later with a few more thoughts.

This was definitely corked... text book example.

Really nice offline in Adelaide as a late inclusion, great to meet you guys and thanks for a fantastic night. I was surprisingly alive the next day despite the obligatory “one more drink”! ... we can’t all be as responsible as Craig was!

My votes for wine of the night go to the Standish, Jasper’s Hill and the Jack Mann in no particular order. I also thought the LEAS was pretty bloody nice. The BL was singing nicely, the JR needs another 10 years in Magnum at least. The Sami Odi were lovely as always, glad I have a few of the Hoffman Dalwitz in the cellar.
