I've come across many, many bottles that had a knife cut across the top of the screwcap from when the box was cut open. Some mere scratches, and others seemingly all the way through the metal.
Interestingly, though, in my experience, they've still drunk alright. Maybe that cushiony inner cap thing lodged up inside the cap can make a good enough seal at times.
I've also seen a number of leaking screwcapped bottles, and naturally enough, in those instances, the first sign is wine emerging at the bottom of the cap mechanism where the metal stops.
