good work, but it goes downwhill from here, as your spending will be somewhat hidden. soon you will need many more lockers and as you will have filled ur storage space... & later on you'll find yourself begging retailers to sell you 1st growrg BDX & rare Grand Cru Burgs.

I opened a bottle of the Clonakilla SV '01 last week at lunch. It really is an awesome wine, amazing depth of flavour and complexity. It would have to be neck and neck with a couple of bottles of Brokenwood Graveyard as the best shiraz I have had in the last 12 months or so. I must admit when the price of one Grange is equal to 6 bottles of the Clonakilla, I think my preference would normally be to pick up 6 Clonakilla. I really do wonder whether the Grange could actually get any better than the SV. The question of course that remains to be seen is how long Clonakilla will age.

Now how to hide them from the wife??

(1) deliver to work, and take to storage facility discretely, or one by one to home cellar over a few weeks.

Or just deliver to ur wine storage facility where they'll hold until you pack away or pick up the wine, like they do for me at kennards. 8)

On the buying front, eyeing lots, but limited funds. however i did manage to hide a purchase on a separate card (from my better half)of a btl of 06 DRC La tache. Happy i got some but ouchy ouch on the price!

Just picked up a bottle of the 2005 Wolf Blass "Black Label" Cab Shiraz for 3 cellar shares at VC with their current promotion :)

Anyone got any thoughts on a drinking window for this wine?

thanks

Halliday gives it to 2025, 94pts, tasted Oct 08. There's also a malbec component in the blend. Should be ready to rocknroll after 12-15 years if the oak has integrated nicely by then. JH's TN indicates that although obvious the oak was already intwerwound with the fruit at the time it was tasted.

Thanks daz.

Im wondering if we are talking about the same wine though...or vintage at least? The bottle suggests is 51% cab sav and 49% shiraz. no mention of any other grapes. I think the 2004 vintage might have had malbec in the blend as well?

Hi David

I'd go with the back label components as the Halliday site lists vintages from 1993 to 2005 as all being cab/shiraz/malbec blends, perhaps publishing corner-cutting. I've noticed that his drinking windows for some wines appear somewhat generic but there are fluctuations, the 2004 of this label given a drinking window to 2029 with an allusion to the quality of the vintage. If, as it seems, you have just the one bottle, it would depend on how mature you like your wine as to when it would be best to drink. As it's screwcap-sealed and it's still a bit conjectural about the longevity of wines under screwcap it may well develop and hold for 30 years. Ultimately, the choice is yours, mine would be to drink by 15 years. I'm planning to drink a 1997 Tahbilk 1860s Vines Shiraz within the next couple of weeks but it is sealed under cork.

Cheers

Church Rd Reserve Syrah 07... Smelled absolutely disgusting. Really foul brett.

tasted this again last night with your comment in mind and went searching long and hard for brett. My conclusion is I have to totally disagree with you. what drugs are you on?? Could be that without American oak this is what Syrah can smell like??? :)

loved it

Have resisted a lot of cheap "stuff" and discounted "this and that" . Instead invested in some class at a reasonable price

07 Awatea for $27, another 6 pack. A great label, a great vintage, proven cellaring power and a good price

A dozen of those Chateau Reynella 05 cleanskins that have been banging around. Not really my style these days but was tempted by the relative QPR and figured they'll go a long way for BBQs and the like at the very least!

Spending breaks on for wife and I post wedding and pre first born which we are currently somewhere near half way between.
Based on Red Biggots tasting comments bought a case of GIMBLETT ROAD CABERNET MERLOT MALBEC 2006 at $5.50 a bottle on graysonline (cheapest dozen I have bought). Slightly too savoury for my style but more than worth the price

After a relatively quiet couple of months:

'06 Bordeaux en primeurs:

LAFAURIE- PEYRAGUEY
DUHART MILON ROTHSCHILD
LAGRANGE
GLORIA
HAUT BAGES LIBERAL
LA TOUR BLANCHE

'07 Rhone:

Vieux Donjon
Vieille Julienne

Rockford Basket Press '04

Craggy Range The Quarry '07

Esk Valley The Terraces '06

& unlike Craig I've not had the willpower to pass on all the special offers, so a few others as well ... (most notably the Wild Rock '07 Syrah & the Craggy Range Glasnevin Riesling '08).

Cheers
Peter

The wife came home with some 08 cr glasnevin last night from "that sale". I really loved the 06 and never had a chance to try the 07. We cracked a bottle last night. Its good wine without being spectacular. Not quite the precision of thye best but still good

Agree, but still eminently drinkable. Interesting to see how much Craggy's out there on special at the moment -- pretty well everything it seems other than the premium labels. ('That sale' isn't the only place you've been able to pick up the Glasnevin at that price over the past couple of weeks.)

I assumed so. Loved his 2007 shiraz and SV (only problem they need long time to reach their best) but never tried his Viognier before. Looking forward to taste it.

Yip and we have lately been mourning the increasing prices on the best rieslings of this style. No longer the bargains they used to be. Picked up another Church Rd Reserve Syrah for $30 from LL yesterday. Its becoming increasingly clear to me that the 08 Hawkes Bays are likely to be pretty dire perhaps even competing for worst vintage of the decade (premature prediction perhaps but hey), so now is the time to flick a few more 07's into the cellar while waiting for the 09's which looks like it could be the "1998 of this decade"
