I think you are looking at this from a funny angel. The RRP on the St Henri is about $50, the retailers were specialing it off at around $40 which gives them a much lower margin than normal. Many of them may also have done deals with SC to buy large quantity to enable them to get a better buy price.

Sure, but they do a good deal with the maker, then fake 20% discounts and the like in BIG Chrissie sales, leaving the small retailer scrabbling for a way to keep the prices down while still being able to pay the rent. Now I understand my view of the retail end would have to be an ignorant one because I am not in the business, but I just don't think the big gun retailers work that way. The majority of my experience is that usually when something comes on sale at a real reduction it's generally crud or they need to shift old stock for myriad reasons. I also understand this is fair enough, but I rarely see wines on sale like this at point of release unless it is already great QPR (generally from new labels overdelivering).

Yes you are correct. It is just you being cynical. I have no commercial interest with any retailer at all...and even if I did there is no bloody margin in it anyway at that price! I have had a drink of the wine and think it is good gear and fairly priced. Don't you think it is good to have some light and shade in any argument (I am the light in case you could not work it out ) . If you have read any reviews that I have been involved in then I would like to think that they are honest and unbiased. There is no gain involved in moulding any reviews to suit sales nor is there ever any expectation that I/we should do so. Honest opinions - honest. I have little enough credibility without having to resort to bodgy tasting notes!

Perhaps another appropiate way to look at whether the wine is fairly priced is to examine what the "market" (albeit a small one) pays for the wine in a competitive auction environment.

Looking at the 2000 389 in the most recent langton auction there were 2 lots, one sold for $30 per bottle, one sold for $26 per bottle. Leaving an average of $28 + 15% = $32.20, which when you add a premium on for the (hopefully) quality of the 2001 vintage over the 2000 vintage maybe the pricing of mid 30's is not too far off??

Obviously a very small sample not taking into consideration large volumes etc etc.

If you are all so worried about 389 which has gone up $15 in ten years.
What do you say about

Wynns John Riddoch C/S and Michael Shiraz which fell the other year from $100 to $50. Wynns as we all know are also part of SC.

Probably the inevitable complaint is going to be "I paid $100 for them three years ago, now SC has halved their value, and their value to me in my cellar"

What do you guys want ?
Wines sell at the price the market (local or overseas) will bear. If they get the domestic pricing wrong on 389 like they did on JR and Michael, the price will eventually fall anyway.

Re the 389 going up $15 in ten years, it was more like an 75% increase in five years. As the those poor unfortunates who paid $90 for the JR, there were very few of them and thats why the wine sat there and did not sell.

Now that's spooky.....

PS I'm insulted by the "fat lady" remark, I haven't put on any weight and Ric has faded to a shadow of his former self.

You're right, the usage of colour throughout this thread has let much to be desired.

It's getting so that anytime anyone writes something they need to use . three different colours, not to mention bold, and a big font otherwise the post isn't worth reading.

Very happy to be buying JR instead of 389 if the prices are going to be the same. By the way, what does John Riddoch sell for over in the US?

Hi All, for whats its worth I was one of the lucky ones who got my Riddoch and Michael early. A six pack of each. But there is a god a mate on the coast decided that his collection was now only worth $50 a bottle and it may not be a good wine after all So I picked up a six pack of 86 90 and 91 Riddock for $1500 all from a good cellar
