Have a look for Vajra Bricco delle Viole 2012 if you can find.

So the answer is if the corks are good, no topping up. If needs re-corking then topped up, but not with current vintage. Sounds like good policy to me.

2012 Burlotto Barolo had this over a couple of nights. It was very light on its feet on night one, floral and delicate, some cherry, orange peel and a little grip on the tannins. Day two there was more structure, tannins had a lot more grip but the nose and palate had opened up a bit more. Really like the Burlotto wines I have had, Monvigliero, Cannubi and Freisa. Very traditional, nothing flashy but great drinking at very reasonable prices.

Me too. We'll all be in the soup though with the 13 Monvigliero that bloody Galloni rated 100 points recently. Grrrr.

Also a fan of Burlotto, understated and delicious.

Burlotto a strong recommendation for a winery visit. Very hospitable, Fabio speaks excellent English and the range is broad with interest across the board. Even the Savvy's are interesting and the oak aged one ages very well.

I was surprised to see this and the scores he gave the other Burlotto wines for 2013 - whilst he has given mid 90's scores he has sometimes been a bit down on the Monvigliero. Looks like this one might need to go into the backfill bucket!

Burlotto and Cavallotto are the first two on my wish list for the trip I have in May.

Verduno (where Burlotto are based) is a charmingly sleepy village compared to the now quite touristed Barolo, and places like La Morra, Castiglione Falletto, Monforte & Serralunga d'Alba which are better but still have a noticeable trickle/stream of tourists. As well as Burlotto, there are about a half dozen other producers and if going again I'd be looking to lunch here as well for a really chilled day - on our last visit we stayed at the very good apartments Agriturismo val di Spinso in Santa Vittoria d'Alba which is only a 10 minute drive away so we headed back there for lunch. If you've not got accommodation yet, these are very spacious / well-fitted with pool a modest sized but lovely gardens.

I grabbed 3 more bottles of the 58.

Verduno has been under the radar for a while and I thought it would continue to be that way. I recommend this place for dinner and a stay. It was previously owned by the House of Savoy. Superb restaurant and the wine list was cheap for aged Barolo.

They make Monvigliero too. They are related to the Burlottos so you can try side by side. I did this and it was a lot of fun discussing the little known Cru and its nuances due run off.

Also, the Chef is Olek Bondonios wife so get a tour of Roncaglitte- Sori Tildin and Costa Russi!

Was fortunate enough to dine at Castello di Verduno on our last trip, we had a wonderful meal (simple food done right) and the dining room is a real blast from the past.

I hosted a dinner for my wine group last year at the Castella di Verduno. Nice range.

Yes I liked Castello di Verduno when we visited, though in some quarters they get summarily dismissed for "not being as good as Burlotto". I think that view is very harsh, but indicative of a mindset where hierarchies are important to establish....

Interested to taste both Barbaresco / Barolo at the same producer (the separate plots brought together by marriage). I'd certainly be interested in your views on those wines if you have any notes Jamie. We visited when the 2006s 2007s and 2008s were the current release and I was certainly happy with the balance of the 2007s here (in addition to the 2006s and 2008s which are a little less contentious). IIRC we came away with a bottle of Pelaverga and a couple of Barbaresco halves, as these are often difficult to find, and CT says we've drunk them already!!

No notes, I do remember they got some new barrels and this was noticeable in the wines compared to previous vintages. And yes, they do seem hard to find, in Asia this being due the silly prices commanded by the importer resulting in little interest or distribution- saw the list in HKG and told them to pee off.

Paulo Scavino has a plot in Monvigliero now. Be a good shoot out with Burlotto.

Burlotto Monvigliero noted, and unusual I'd say, for it's use of whole bunches. Works so well in that wine.

2013 Barolos now just being released, and it seems a quite outstanding vintage for these wines, at least, this early on.

Just received an offer for the 2013 Barolos from ROBERTO VOERZIO ...

Seem quite outstanding,will soon offer them out to any/those interested. (even have a back vintage release cellared by the winery).

As an aside, had a bottle of Massolino Barolo 2012 last week, didn't take any notes but it is an excellent Barolo, starting out very fresh and almost pretty by Barolo standards and ending up quite powerful (but balanced) after a few hours of air, strong buy recommendation.

Good to know. I've never tried Barolo from that producer before. I bought a bottle last night based on positive reviews.

B Mascarello 2012 v Vietti Brunate 2012 v G Conterno Francia 2012

Hands down Conterno.

I've drunk enough Mascarello to be confident in it being in number two place at various stages of its evolution. Vietti a wildcard.

Great thanks. The Francia is double the price of Bartolo - this now makes it hard!

I'd suggest 2 x bottles of Mascarello defeats a Conterno on both investment/value and enjoyment stakes?

I don't think the Brunate stacks up with those two. The Vietti Rocche maybe would be up there.

Brezza Barolo 2000
Cork was good condition, after decanting was initially quite shut down, showing basically only acid and balsamic, however after around 3 hours there were shifting secondary characters of caramelised balsamic, coffee and porcini. Some dried rose petals on the nose, yet at this stage essentially no fruit character left. Small licks of tannin did emerge with air.

Wish I had the opportunity to go back in time 4-5 years and open it then.
