I bought half a dozen of these based on past vintages, but was not impressed with the one I opened. There was a pong alright, but I'm not sure whether it was a particularly appealing one, nor that Malbec should be entirely blamed for it.
I detected that glue smell that I can never remember whether to call acetate or acetone, and I found it very unpleasant.

Penfolds Bin 389 1996: Such hype about a wine i've wanted to try for a long time......it really didn't do a huge amount for me....sure a nice aged well balanced red but really i was underwhelmed.
Wirra Wirra Woodhenge Shiraz 2007: A young rich ripe McLaren Vale shiraz and for me although very different styled wines clearly outpointed the 389. Most agreed in our group apart from a cab sav nut!!
Orlando Semillon Sauternes 1988: For a 20yr+ stickie it was still going strong...great for a $12 purchase

Agree with the 1996 389 (we must be the only two though ). Good aged wine but nothing wow for me after a few attempts now.

It's funny because I've had (from the same batch) one or two superb bottles of it and one or two good to very good bottles. Variation is the spice of life.

2005 Henschke Mount Edelstone Shiraz- I have never experienced this before, but the nose had a distinct tuna character, the canned tuna variety.... Very odd. Everyone agreed. Can't say I enjoyed it for this reason...
2005 Teusner Avatar GSM- Delicious.
What a shame about the 05 Edelstone. Just the bottle I hope. Love this wine. Oh, and the 05 Teusner Avatar is, as you said, delicious. Have you tried the 06 yet?
Sean wrote:Orpheus, the gluey smell could be a sign of excessive acetic acid in the wine or volatile acidity. Low levels of this (which is standard in red wine, isn’t it?) just give the wine a nice fruity aroma I think. Maybe it’s the bottle variation genie and some bottles show the acetic acid more (as you found it) and in other bottles the aroma is fruity (as I found it). I haven’t tried any other bottles of this wine as far as I can remember, except for the one that I tried at this tasting which wasn’t faulty, but that’s not really much help to you, especially if you find the next one you open has turned to vinegar. Give it another go and hopefully it will be OK.
Good advice, Sean. I thought I'd leave the rest to settle down a bit. I have noticed it with other wines from time to time (for instance, vintages of the By Farr shiraz), and most often with screwcap wines - I suspect that this aspect of the winemaking remains detectable under screw cap for longer, but that over time, it will go. Suspect for no particularly good reason, I should admit!

No I haven't Jeremy,
Is it any good?
I put it just a notch below the 05, but it might just be splitting hairs. Another year in the bottle could make the difference too. Either way I reckon Teusner have made another excellent wine. Thanks for getting back to me, appreciated as always.
