They use their own names, but they're not registered, they post as guests, but with their real names.

Hence if I set the site to only allow posts and responses from registered members they would not be able to post.

Apologies, so you are!

I lean more to the registration side and I don't really care if there are many nom de plumes among them.

I don't mind the 'guest' contributions really, but there is often a lack of tolerance to these guests when they can easily be ignored, and then it turns into an ugly brawl - very often. Not attractive.

I honestly can't understand why people get so upset about guests. It doesn't bother me at all. It's good to register and get to know people by their handle but I'm more interested to just see people posting and getting a range of opinions. It's certainly preferable that people are registered and logged in but I would hate to see it made mandatory as I truly think we would lose a lot of people.

I think it's good that you can post without registering as I think new people are more likely to post initially and for those that don't remember logins, it is a hassle to login in all the time. I've actually never posted at Starforum simply for the reason that I couldn't be bothered registering and no other reason.

I certainly agree that sometimes it can get confusing if there are multiple guests posting but it really doesn't happen that often.

I also think that the registered people here can get into enough arguements all by themselves without having to worry about so called drive by posters causing troubles. The genuinely troll like are very few and far between and I haven't seen one here for literally years.

Just my opinion.

Ok.. Here is my take on it. Or at least the segment of the guest community that is like me.

Personally I registered to participate in the makers discussions that were going on some time ago. I wanted to participate. It required registration and so I did.

As you can see, I have been registered for a while, but posted while logged in only a few times. However I have posted probably a dozen more as a guest. More out of lazyness than a desire to be hidden, or to protect myself. But I have done it for those reasons - particularly early on. Why? I can hear you asking.

For someone with an average understanding, cellar and pallette this forum can appear to be an intimidating place. There are people who regularly participate in this forum who have cellars beyond that which I can dream of, who regularly drink wines which I might hope to be able to drink once or twice in a lifetime. Even Torbs regular "what are you drinking now" thread can read like one-upmanship at times. Now don't get me wrong. I love reading contributors notes and all of the discussions that go on. I am an ever present lurker on the list. I have learned alot from it, and it has improved my understanding of what I drink and what I look for when I do.

I think that it is fair to say that anyone who finds this list is looking for "more" about wine. That is a given. Some will already know alot and seek the companionship of like minded individuals. Others are early in their wine odessy.

So how do you get people like me to become active members of the community? I'm not sure, but here is one example which I have transposed from a non-wine environment where I am an expert.

We all know that once a week there is what is effectively a "tasting notes" thread that is started by torb. Perhaps a similar "wine of the week" thread where there is a broad discussion of the likes and dislikes of a particular wine that is readily commercially available. Im not talking detailed tasting notes but more general discussion which in essencse turns into an online tasting.

There are other things I could and might suggest, but this should at least get the discussion going.

So that last post of yours get proper attenetion it deserves and this one doesnt get side-tracked too much; why not cut and post the suggestion into a new thread. Then edit the above post asking peole to comment on the tasting suggestion in the new thread.

Even being shy and sensitive like me I really don't see the problem with registering but I can understand some people not doing it...

All I ask is that guests don't use their anonymity to post flames and attacks without consideration for other posters as quite often happens...
I just think that's a bit gutless.
