New cellar after 20 years kids/mortgage - Help needed!

Hi Martin,

I suppose we live and learn. I had received earlier advice to avoid some of the odd years (with the exception of 1991 and 1999 which I understand to have been reasonable years in SA and WA), which I followed . However, when it came to some deals - which looked pretty good for known wines and known storage conditions, I tended to rely on Jeremy Oliver's ratings. He rates each of the wines you mention well into the 90's.

I suspected I was taking a risk but I found a number of older wines from a good source and the prices were pretty good in comparison to the auctions. I am a bit tentative in the auctions and have really only given them a try on wines I can't get anywhere else. Managed to pick up some corkers today at auction - beware, the prices will hurt!

3 x Penfolds Bin 90A (2@$180 and 1@$200)
1 x Bin 920 ($140!!)

Martin,

Interestingly I think Jancis rated the 2000 Cape Mentelle was her favourite cab wine from her recent Aussie trip.

I have also been thru a few cases and it is a pretty decent wine.

Never been a fan of JO. Some of the wines I adored was rated 16._ /20 exp. Jasper Hill Gergia '99, Cyril Henschke 94 and the list goes on....

Adam,
Jancis tends to favour "traditional claret" (elegant) style. I expect a $50 wine to impress. "Decent" is in the <$20s category.
