I’m not sitting this one out after checking general vintage quality is strong and the three wines offered are my favourite anyway.
I am currently in Scotland playing golf at the legendary Cruden Bay golf club. Brilliant!
Love that course! Not too far to Royal Aberdeen and the Trump course… then trek south to the most brutal course on earth…. Carnoustie . But if you have time, I strongly recommend Royal Dornoch… my second favourite course anywhere. Enjoy!

Hi Mike, this is without doubt the most low tone minimal expectation run up to a Wendouree allocation in living memory. I wonder what percentage of mail order recipients didn’t get an order form. I did order but fully expect to be cut back, and am happy if so.

Re golf, we are privileged to have reciprocal arrangements with Royal Dornoch so wife and I visit whenever we are in Scotland. Once there, we do Brora, Castle Stewart and Nairn, followed by Cruden Bay (twice, as it is really that good) and down to the Old Course to be a part of the 150th Open. Rory and Victor Hovland have centre stage at present but never count our very own mullet Cam Smith, who realistically is the real deal. He can do this tomorrow and my vocal chords will get a serious working out.

Yes agree, well said, don't follow or play, someone said once it ruins a good walk. Great for ther young man and hope he doesn't turn into something ( I don't think he will), like the current idiot who is organising some sort of alterative tour.

Now we can get back to wine

Obviously a few beneficiaries of shared allocations here. Don’t mean to offend, but the connection I see between flippers & friends is long term customers are determining Wendouree allocations and not the winery.

My personal view is once the wine is sold, it can be sold again. I don’t really huff and puff over flippers. Tough way to make a quid and more often than not, they must be in it for American Express points, as most of the wines barely seem to make mailing list price plus wine auction commission.

Giving 3 bottles to my son, he probably won't have to pay and 3 to a mate...he can pay mail order price and might throw in an extra dollar or 2 for freight.
Succession plan has begun

I always share my order with a friend in the Netherlands. He pays the cost price and we share the postage - I send him 6 Wendouree and another assorted 6 to use in online tastings.

Yep as far as I’m concerned it’s nobodies business what you do with the wines after you buy them. Sell them to friends or auction. All the same morally as you are deciding the allocation and not the winery. Plenty of mailing list folks miss out whilst others flip at auction or flog to mates.

I actually get more irritated when newbies want a piece of the pie when you’ve been supporting and visiting a winery for years and they’ve just caught up with emerging fame. I saw this in Italy at Mascarello. People would be in tears telling Maria Teresa how important it was that they buy wine from her. Reality was they just wanted it a her cheap direct price versus 5 x more at retail.

Anyways hope to fire up the Wendouree thread so happy flipping.

I think, just quietly, that if this is your position then Craig is not the right target of your angst... I am fairly confident to say he is the opposite of a "newbie" when it comes to Wendouree...

There’s no angst at all. And Craig’s not a target of anything. It’s a different Wendouree opinion that’s all.

The yearly Wendouree thread often ends when the first lots turn up at auction. The flippers are cursed. The crayon hierarchy that sees juniors miss out on Wendouree or get just a few bottles gets riled.

Now here’s my difference of opinion. If you take an allocation of Wendouree and distribute it yourself to family, friends or friends of friends, you are no different to a flipper who more randomly distributes their allocation via a secondary market.

Morally, some love to slam the flipper, yet a higher priority crayon is denying many lower crayons wine with their own self-serving process of taking more of their allocation than they need, and distributing as they see fit.

It’s great there’s fire and brimstone in the annual Wendouree thread. They are only opinions. So everyone keep their hair on.

It's the difference between sharing the love and profiteering from the vintner's decision to sell the wine at a fair price.

my last mailing list vintage was 1999, I'd say I purchased the wines from the early 80's, although I can't really remember. Maybe earlier than that. Back then, the allocations were not much (I'm guessing) but I do remember having a crayon on my offer lol. I used to buy between 2 and 4 dozen each vintage.

If I was the owner, I'd make the (correct) assumption that I am selling the wines at less than a fair price and increase such considerably. If they were worried about too high profits, give the excess to charity. If someone wants to sell a product way below market value (most apparent in Burgundy), I don't see any moral issue in selling it to a source who will pay more.... it is the basis of capitalism and free trade!!

My goodness, you sound like a pre-schooler hoarding all the toys while the new kids have to watch on. What would Wendouree do when your folk fall off their perch and those newbies haven’t been introduced to their wines. And how much Wendouree do you need?

Now here’s a position loaded with self-interest? That’s ok because all opinions on this thread lean that way. Whether a long term buyer or a newbie not wanting to pay a bit more for the wine on a secondary market.

I don’t think I have a right to the DRC mailing list ahead of long term buyers. How much Wendouree is needed? Forum members here indicating is it’s ok for long term mailing list to run their own distributions to friends. Personally, I enjoy presenting Wendouree dinners to international friends. 20 bottles needed per event roughly.

Sounds like you are taking very good care of your friends, that's cool. I am sure other recipients of an allocation take good care of their friends or family too.

I was up there today, good news for future allocations. 2022 was a very good year for them quantity and quality-wise , might be something special in the pipeline come 2024 release.
