Michael, I was really hoping that the 2022 vintage would be ordinary, but it appears to be right up there. Drumborg will eventually make it to Craig's place

I assume "Craig's place" will be the name for the riesling themed wine bar you will need to open soon to have any chance of drinking all the bottles you have squirelled away?

Yes the level of Riesling is beyond silly...the 2021 and 22 vintages certainly are not helping
Sam, I can't have Craig's List or Bar...already taken or trademarked, but I'll think about Craig's Place :D

My mother was very excited when she sent me a wine voucher for my birthday a few months ago. “It’s nearby “. Now Perth is only 22km from my hometown back in Scotland, but Perth and Melbourne are not exactly within driving distance of each other. Anyway, I just redeemed and bought

1* Gralyn Rare Tawny
1* Gralyn Classic Muscat
1* Gralyn Rare Muscat

My partner sprayed the bottles with a sulfur solution, another fellow filled the bottles (and our glasses) and I operated the corking machine. The Duck Muck drank beautifully straight out of the stainless steel tank and into the glass.

It was a fun afternoon and evening with Dave Anderson and his staff.
Sounds like a disaster letting amateurs involved. Times have since changed.
Amateurs! I'll have you know that I had years of experience extracting corks from wine bottles. Surely doing it in reverse would be easy. To be fair the machine was idiot proof (no reflection on my person of course) and easy to operate. The cellar hand simply handed me the filled magnum and all I had to do was centre the bottle in the machine, press the pedal, and the machine plunged the cork into the neck.

I'll bet that those magnums drank beautifully.

Something surprising happened. I ordered 10 bottles of wine, and I think for the first time ever for a purchase of that size or more... all were still white wines. Perhaps a rare glimpse of that blinding orange fireball in the sky has befuddled me? I don't recall the vintages (except for the Tyrrells) but the wines were
3x Massa Timorasso Derthona
3x Leitz Rüdesheimer Magdalenenkreuz Riesling Kabinett

then 1 each of
2015 Tyrrells HVD semillon
Willi Haag Brauneberger Juffer-Sonnenuhr Riesling Auslese
Rouve Arbois Chardonnay
Escarpment Chardonnay

Nice. They do great sweet / fortified, albeit it isn't cheap.
FWIW, Gralyn is another 250kms+ distance from Perth. :D

Two more wines in the first time ever category, both from Spain:

2015 Bodega y Vinedos Ponce 'Buena Pinta, Moravia Agria/Garnacha, DOP Manchuela, Castilla-La ManchaSpain (12.5%). Moravia may sound like a place in eastern Europe but the Moravia Agria is a rare variety that "produces light-coloured, fruity red wines with aromas of flowers, herbs and grasses".

2020 Gaintza Txakolina, DO Getariako Txakolina (11.5%). This white is from the Basque country and is composed of 80% Hondarrabi Zuri, 15% Gros Manseng. Apparently the Hondarrabi Zure wines have intense aromas of pear and exotic fruits, as well as citrus, herbaceous and floral nuances, with notable acidity and a medium to moderate alcohol content.

My first wines made from Moravia Agria and Hondarrabi Zuri and I am looking forward to trying them.

The FHT seemed in fine yet slightly closed shape about 7 years ago - I've not tried it since.

Con, the Saltram's are more of the fortifieds?
Well done on the GW reserve, had a 97 and or 98 a little while ago, tasting note was on a thread here. They are fantastic wines, thankfully have a few more of each.
Cheers Craig

Thanks Ian, I haven't had the FHT before. Got one standing up, will open it in the next few weeks.

Hi Craig.

Yes they are the fortifieds, missing the sherry in one of the sets but have an extra tawny and white port.
Don't open many fortifieds these days since I'v pulled out of most the wine groups I used to attend.

Had the standard 97 GW shiraz a few months ago which was a bit tiered but still very enjoyable.

Cheere Con.

Hi Con, have 5 of the 97 standard left, been a long time since I looked at one. Just out of interest also have a sixer of 1998 GW cabernet, tall skinny bottle, not sure but think it was a one off. Remember buying it from Ed cellars when Andrewartha was in charge and he knew I liked cabernet. It was very good, so went back for 6.

Went along to the MW Wine tasting tonight specifically to taste the 2 Dappled wines (very good Chardonnay and Pinot). The 20 Te Mata Coleraine was on tasting and it has a superb nose and I can see why it was liked so much by the critics. Took home 3 bottles.

After a amazing Victorian Riesling last weekend, I picked up a mixed bunch of (hopefully) mature Riesling at Auction.

2* 2013 Granite Hills Riesling
1 each of 2000, 2005, 2008,2009 & 2013 Seppelt Drumborg Riesling

I did tell Trudi at the start of the year that I was only going to buy 16 bottles this year…quality rather than quantity. Not going very well.

I have finally wised up, instead of finding Aust Post blue slips in my front door and having to collect, I now just have wine delivered direct and can go to the annex at my leisure, instead of having to do the walk of shame when getting home from work.

Pathetic really
