Tried this last week and was very impressed. Best Aussie pinot I've ever had at this price-point.

2 x 1991 Mt Mary Pinot Noir for $85 each at auction yesterday.

Thought it was worth the gamble as they came from a cellar of a restaurant in Wellington who most probably had them since release.

We had an 83 mm pinot a few years ago and it was very drinkable
First vintage was 77 cabernet
A freak great wine

3 x Ducks and Drakes - which used to be a Cabernet/Shiraz but is now pretty much straight Cab I think and 1 x Fortified Duck to round out my case.

Yes, going to the WDCE vertical tasting here in Brisbane. Very excited to see how some of my older vintages are travelling - I have been very disciplined with not opening too early. I only just opened my first 2009.

I cracked open a 2015 Springflat last weekend - consumed over 2 days - everything you'd want from a full bodied Shiraz, loved it. Looking forward to the 2016 also.

I broke my previous 'most spent on a bottle' to get the Standish Lamella (~100) with the previous highest being the 2012 Yangarra Ironheart (~90). Slippery slope... those Winefront lads are a bad influence!

At ~600 bottles now and both wine fridges full, I've just received instruction from the boss to stop buying wine. I said Yes knowing full well I'd be buying the Marius wines as soon they are released... oh well.

Understandable. I'm in a similar position, don't need any young Bordeaux but a magnum of 2009 Cantenac-Brown for $100 was irresistable. And for the record, I'd trade the '09 magnum for a couple of '01 Moss Woods. Seriously.

Having a finite capacity to store wine (and not cheating by using offsite storage) is IMO the best way to control spending. Agree that capacity with ypur spouse and there can be no arguments, you agreed the limit together and you have to work within that constraint.

The other upside, is it can really help focus buying. When deciding whether to buy anything, it's in your mind that buying those bottles, means there are other bottles that won't fit and so you can't buy. For me this has significantly lessened my tendency to buy wines that were a good price, that I might already have enough of (or enough of a similar style). What I do buy now is often more exploratory & diverse.

Found a 2007 Benevelli Barbera hidden away, and tried it out. For me it was an amazing moment, I never believed just how beautiful a Barbera wine could be. Wife and looked at each other and we both said wow. Sweet fruit up front although slipping into tertiary territory. Structured and generous, we couldn’t think of a better Wine for the money. I had permission to buy a doz of the current vintage being 2016. It doesn’t need to be cellared, but will put half away to see if it improves like the 2007 version did.

I simply adore barbera, and there has hardly been one I haven't liked given its price bracket. The bolder examples do age well as you have discovered. I always put a way a few bottles of the bigger barbera to age. Outside of Italy I've not had many barberas but based on the 2005 I tasted at cellar door I highly recommend Margan from the Hunter Valley.

Barbera seems to have a reputation as simple quaffing wine that won't age because it doesn't have the tannins of Nebbiolo. What it does have in spades is high acid. Good producers know this and vinify it in a way that allows it to age well.

Giacomo Bologna (aka: Braida) was the first to realise Barbera was ageworthy. Others such as Vietti, Vajra, La Spinetta, Michele Chiarlo, and Giocomo Conterno have followed. Some of these are very exxy Barbera's.

To be fair, there were a number of Barbera wines capable of ageing well before Braida came along, e.g. Gaja, Vallana etc. some still drinking well at half century old. That said, the Italians aren't as excited about long ageing as us. They like the anniversary bottle concept, but one shop I buy from in Torino assumes these bottles don't actually get opened/drunk, unless it's bought by visiting stranieri.

Braida though was a massive influence, especially in oak ageing which bring in some oak tannins to give the acidity additional support. They've (on the whole) aged well, and CT notes on the 1982 BdelU suggest there is plenty of life in them yet, so it'd quite possible they are more ageworthy,
