And a few are pulling shifties. I've just sent one n email saying their sales are fake news ! Prices were increased then the new price discounted back to the original price in a number cases.

I've been buying their grenache, nebbiolo and shiraz Mataro for some time - lovely wines, made next door to Wendouree (Wendouree grapes are used in the shiraz mataro, I gather).

It would be great if you could alert trading standards. They enforce the rules about how long a product must have been on offer at the 'full' price' before it can be marked as reduced. IIRC it's 30 days.

The sooner the UK can be taken out of the fine wine trade to Asia the better. With more and more competition I don't feel I trust any of the UK merchants anymore. What does keep my business is solid logistics and bulk buying power.

Last month I bought the Grimaldi Barolo at 176£ per case of 12. This week Fine and Rare has it reduced 197£ to 178£. The whole sale looks contrived.

What's the name of the department officially? I'll send off a email to F&R.

For solid logistics and bulk buying power, there is a good case to be made for the Wine Society. Owned by its members, and the only merchant I'm aware of that calls out the problem of White Burg premox, offers full money back guarantee on it, and also contacts customers to offer recalls on White Burg that has suffered a high rate of Premox. I'm not a member, but were I to be starting or earlier in my wine-buying journey, then it would be the merchant I'd buy most from. These days my buying is quite eclectic / focused, so I haven't made the (smallish) outlay to join.

FWIW I respect F&R more than some of their competitors, including one I've met in person, who gave the impression of being rather too shifty (no names in public to respect Gavin's views on playing fair with other merchants, but happy to PM). In terms of the wines F&R sell, I suspect much is either brokered, or bought from *other merchants / wine traders. If you've had bad experiences, then sticking to in bond stocks should remove a lot of problems of wine that does the circuit of personal cellar -> wine auctions -> shop stock -> wine auctions etc.

Maybe not as contrived as you'd think, as I know comparing prices is very much an ongoing practice in the secondary market. The friend mentioned above grew aware that a small number of merchants would request his list, but never buy anything. His belief was that they wanted his list to plug into his pricing expertise, to help price their own stock. Prices would be monitored, such that if someone offered a wine cheaper, invariably you'd be forced to *lower your own price for the wine. I suspect that is what happened here, though marking it as a 'sale' is rather disingenuous.

A friend was on holiday in Bordeaux and so has come back with 3 cases of Champange.For me there is a mixed case of 12 from a shop in Reims. Apparently all grower champagnes rather than the grand names. Looking forward to it.

Sounding like Persian rug salesman or those jewellery spruikers, up to 60% off...one item, or 90% off what price...who would know.
My grandfather was extremely successful in business...its all about volume and turnover...even the big boys at the top end of town have to reduce their prices when no one is coming into their shop...funny and I suspect most retailers have the same wholesale price...but just depends how much they wish to gouge Joe Public in terms of their profit margin.

CLOSING DOWN! EVERYTHING MUST GO!

I am sure there are a couple of rug shops in Adelaide that have been "closing down" continuously for the last 20yrs!

Just occasionally, a genuine 'closing down' sale comes along and it reminds me so much of the more innocent days where such things were more genuine. One of these (~ 8 years ago) was an online UK wine shop specialising in Western Australian wine from the likes of Dukes, Thompson Estate, Arlewood & Rickety Gate.

e.g. Thompson Estate Chardonnay at £8.30, Arlewood Cab Sav Reserve at £6.80

There's a few excellent and cheap stores in Reims. And quite a few producers have 2008s on sale there...

Yes Ian, I fondly recall and may in an earlier post have referred to the good old days of Crittendens and Farmer Bros stores in Melbourne and when they collapsed or were brought out in the mid 80s...it was the sale of all sales. Tuesdays in The Age, in the Epicurean section, ran full page ads in a broadsheet of 100s of wines. I brought many many dozens of all the big SA names which formed the core of my cellar for 50-75% less than the same prices in Adelaide...oh those were certainly the days.
