Walking back from a meeting in the CBD and decided to randomly pop into a wine shop where I found an illustrious bottle of 2014 Chatto Isle Pinot Noir (black label) sitting on the shelf. Needless to say it was duly removed from said shelf and smuggled back into the office. 8)

If you don't mind me asking Diddy, what did it set you back. From memory, these are very low volumes coming out of Tasmania from personal winery of McWilliams winemaker? Never seen any unfortunately.

It was available at a few boutique wine stores, but it sold out as soon as it received a 97 point review by TWF. Awesome find, Diddy!

$86 - not cheap, but my favourite wine (by far) from Pinot Palooza last year so happy to pay a premium.

Unfortunately it was the last bottle...

3 * La Bota "Florpower" 57 - Latest version of the sherry that is not a sherry
3 * Taganan Cuvee Atlantic Blanc - Salty white field blend from Tenerife.

Thanks alexc92 and swirler. I haven't tasted any of them. Chose them based on price first (in my price bracket), then Burghound/Cellartracker reviews. Also wanted bottles that are in/near the drinking window.

Went through Istanbul airport and scored a handful of Turkish wines made from indigenous grapes like Öküzgözü, Boğazkere, and Kalecik Karasi, the latter supposedly having Pinot-like qualities. Boğazkere translates as "throat burner", Öküzgözü means "ox eyes", and Kalecik Karasi is “black from the small castle”.

One of each:

2013 Melen 'Melencik' Kalecik Karasi, 14.5%
2011 Melen Öküzgözü, 12.0%
2011 Corvus Öküzgözü-Boğazkere, 13.5%
2012 Büyülübag Okuzgozu-Bogazkere, 14%
2014 Büyülübag 'Iris' rosé, 14%

At the duty free there was a tasting of three Büyülübag wines, a rosé, a Cabernet, and a reserve Shiraz. I thought the quality of all three were very good. I liked the Cabernet better than the Shiraz though both were fine examples of elegant wine-making. Despite that, but based on the quality of all three, I opted for a bottle of their blend of native varieties. The Iris rosé meanwhile was dry, savoury, had plenty of acidity and, according to the winery, is the only rosé made from the indigenous Adakarasi grape. I was told that Büyülübag does make a red wine from the same grape but was not available at the duty free store. I would have liked to have bought that.

Now I need to exhibit patience to allow the wines to settle from their journey and to wonder whether I should let the reds age for a few years or open them to understand the grape variety.

Mahmoud.

6 magnums 2005 La Rioja Alta Gran Reserva904.

I've stored my 6 mags of 04 long term in Australia and the 05's I'll drink most now though get one or two down to the cellar. Amazing near quaffing value as always at 80 aussie per magnum !

I am back now, only had a very short trip into the Winelands despite spending 10 days in Cape Town, went on Saturday afternoon on our way back from a wedding on the Friday night with a plan to do some serious tasting on the Sunday, however, most places are closed on the Sunday (I assume for religious reasons), so didn't manage to taste all that much. Some very good wine, most wine is sensational for the price, for example some flagships the equivalent of about $10-15. The Rust En Vrede Estate was the best I tasted. The Vergelegen V is OK, it is one of the South African Icons but even that only set me back about $100.

We are considering buying a place on the coast North of Cape Town we loved it that much, despite growing up in Africa I hadn't visited Cape Town much.
