I agree the Johnno's is more approachable now than Vat 1, but with a long life ahead of it. At the cellar door I think my host said it had a little RS but can't quite remember. I loved the texture. I swapped out the Vat 1 from my standing order as I figure I can always buy it later if need be, which I couldn't do with Vat 63 or Johnno's.

I also agree on the Vat 9, I probably won't open one of my bottles for many a year.

For the cellar:
Vat 1 2014 or 2015 (both floating around at retail still)

To drink:
Vat 1 1998 or 1999 (auction)

I hear they do good chardonnay, but I follow my ABCs

Have you sampled any? I have some tucked away...

I tried this wine at a local DM's last Saturday. I am not certain whether the wine was heat affected in its storage, but it was disappointing especially for the price. I am a fan of Riojas, however not this one. All three other people with me (including DM staff) agreed. Best to try before you buy any more.

I opened a bottle to share with a friend because he didn't believe me how good this wine was. It was terrible. I'll be taking it back for a refund, together with the other two I was going to cellar. :( These 3 purchases were from a different store to the one I had previously.

The 15 is good.... The 14 is superb. I bought both. Havent had the 99 for ages but a recent bottle of the 98 was lovely.

Could have been corked? Some of the big Riojas are like Aussies where the taint is masked by the big fruit/oak combo; not discounting a baking somewhere as wine logistics from Europe would shock a lot of folks.

As others have suggested, Vat 1 is the benchmark.

My suggestion to start would be a 2009 Stevens Semillon, which has been released commercially, and is still readily available (at least around my neck of the woods). Good vintage, has a bit of age and is developing, though not fully mature.

It's certainly possible it was corked. I don't have any experience with TCA as I was only drinking Aussie wines until recently which are almost always under screwcap. I don't think I've ever had a corked wine before, so I'm not sure of my ability to detect it. This bottle was barely drinkable (dulled fruit, unbalanced, astringent) and in stark contrast with the bottle I had a week earlier which was magnificent. I was going to return all my bottles, but on second thoughts I'll give the others the benefit of the doubt. I shall return the bad bottle and try one of the others I've got in the cellar to determine if I got a bad bottle or a bad batch.

With Mount Mary wine available soon, it's going to be another big month...

Looking at getting 6 of the Cabernet, 6 of the Pinot and 3 of the Chardonnay.

Also so far, 3 x 2012 Wynns John Riddoch, 3 x 1999 Tyrrells Vat 1 and a single lonesome bottle of 2002 Salon.

Very slow going so far. 2 x Kakaba 2013 Adelaide Hills Reserve Cabernet Sauvignon. Need to pick up the game. Going backwards this month which is not a good thing. Must keep up the critical mass particularly with some great vintages available. There's no such thing as too much wine.

New release of my favourite Champers...

6 x 2006 (Mags) Taittinger Comtes BdB
6 x 2006 (750s) Taittinger Comtes BdB

I tried it pre-release last year. It's very good, but marginally behind the 2002 and 2004 (but miles better than the 2005 and 2007) and way behind the 2008 qualitatively IMO.
