Out of curiousity I just grabbed a couple of bottles of the Mt Mary Reflexion 2009 - the declassified Quintet. Know very little about it. Those of you with a few more connections with the winery - what do they say re drinking window for this wine?

The reflexion was a bit lighter and a little bit charry (Smoke taint?) compared with the normal Mt Mary's.

Of course I tried it after sampling the 04, 05, 06 and 10 (Mt Mary open day), so the palate might have been biased. I reckon it is a drink now style over the next 5 years.

2009 was the bushfires year at the Yarra Valley where a lot of reds were affected by smoke

Rockford time and went large:
6 * Basket Press
6 * Sparkling Black
6 * Rifle Range
6 * Alicante Bouchet

Also from various places:

6 * 02 Lanson Champagne
6 * 11 Gotham shiraz - not bad for a cheapie - had one last night with Thai and was pleasantly surprised. Might get more, it was a bargain.
12 * Trevor Jones Chardonnay - again very cheap and nothing real special but fine for a summer quaffer.
3 * Leo Buring Springvale (I think) Riesling
Another half dozen Clare Valley rielslings that I can't remember
4 * 12 Grosset Polish Hill
4 * 12 Grosset Springvale
4 * 12 Grosset the sweeter one. Can't remember its name. Not doing very well - must be getting old.

And got talked into a dozen burgundy that I also can't remember the details of. Some penfolds joint venture or something. Not sure why I'm even posting all this. it's so vague! LOL.

I went to a champagne tasting in Perth where they had the 2002 Lanson on tasting. However, the bottle they were pouring was madeirised and flat. I asked the guy behind the counter if he had tasted it, and he said yes, and when I asked him if he had tried the wine before that day and if it was representative, he also said yes and that it was the style that Lanson produced. He also told me that many people didn't like that particular bottle. At that point I shrugged my shoulders and moved on. Pity as I was really keen to try it.

Sigh, yes, I went to a similar large Champagne tasting here.

This time it was the Perrier Jouet Belle Epoque. Flat, tired, slightly oxidised. Mentioned it to the pourer, got a similar reaction to yours above. Sigh.

Insisted he get the tasting organiser to check, he raised eyebrows at me, but did.

Lo and behold, new bottle produced, now looking much better!

BTW and FWIW I MUCH preferred the 2002 Lanson to the 'new' bottle of Belle Epoque, even though the new bottle was quite representative.

If you know a little about wine you hear interesting things at these types of tastings. One of them, quite arrogantly poured Billecart Rose ... then self importantly told me they add a little Pinot Noir to it, that's how they make Rose ... and they are the only ones in the world to do this ... really I said, I'm sure other makers do also!

Absolutely no, he said, it is unique! ... double sigh!

4 x 2010 Vasse Felix cabernet merlot
4 x 2012 Tim Adams Clare Valley Riesling
4 x 2012 Jim Barry Watervale Riesling

Don't recall enjoying a better opening to the riesling season, and they have been some good ones in years past. These wines are vivacious, thrilling, and good fun to have around.

Yum.

Nice one GT. Yes I think I've heard of that other winery that does this as well. It's called "Every other winery!"
