I forgot to mention the only difference between food grade argon and welding grade is that BOC will evacuate the cylinder before refilling. The same argon is used for both and is ~99.98% argon, the rest probably nitrogen. I guess there is a chance that you could get some oxygen in there if the cylinder runs empty.I think next time I need a cylinder I will probably get a D size food grade nitrogen cylinder.
In the beginning the problem was bacterial spoilage from not dismantling the tap assembly and cleaning it properly. It isn't a perfect system and no matter how good you are at cleaning stuff you will get a bit of contamination. I recently had a bottle of chardonnay in the fridge under this system and it lasted a week, and by the end you could tell it was starting to turn a bit. Most of the time though I just use the argon cylinder with a hose to give the half bottle of leftover wine a good purge like the winesaver gas cans and put it in the fridge.
As far as I know, argon does not have an odour or taste. I would be interested to read anything that says otherwise.
