I tend to bring 40 - 60 bottles through Sydney once or twice a year. I tell them the AUD equivalent and that I have receipts, and I'm yet to be asked to produce them. Some times they're very, very concessional on the tax (a couple of times I've paid $500 instead of $1500), but most of the time its the full 49+%.

DF is a rip-off. What do you want to buy? I can give you a bit of help.
We just got back from a trip and picked up 1.0l Ardmore, 0.75l Aberfeldy, 1.0l black Kahlua & 1.0l Cointreau for $160. I couldn't get within $40 of this in any shop or shops that I can find. So I'll stick with using DF when I can.
If you are talking wine, well bought HKG retail will be 30-40% cheaper than HKG Duty Free! I don't know about spirits but as mentioned here before, you can not take DF purchases onto the aircraft.
Incidentally, I work at HKG Airport and get a 20% discount and have never used it.

Ah, sorry, at HKG (penny drops). I tend to buy in Aus and pick it up on my return. But I can see what you mean!
Yeah, that "no liquids over 100ml" rule can be a real trap, especially when you try to buy at one location and you have a stop-over. I guess the best rule is to pack it in your suitcase - if you can't do that, then don't bother.

Yup as discussed in a prior thread on this most likely a scam by the Sydney airport to force you to buy your duty free there and not on departure!

Have a look at the Bojinka plot and you can see where these security measures would have come from. Certainly not as a conspiracy to increase duty free sales at Aussie airports!
Good luck all. Hong Kong can be a sensational place to source great wines- do beware of fakes though!
