A few people ask me why I often take the empty bottle home with me. I just love the old school bottles and the detail they have, and when you think about it, it is something that is around 47 years old it seems just a waste to toss it in a bin....
The detail in the capsule, the embossing on the bottle, to the vintage punch out on the label...all little things...yes I know there is no hope for me, the empty wine bottle trainspotter.
I would never get away with storing empty bottles at home, because the brains of the operation has definite minimalist leanings. However there is one bottle that did escape the bottle recycling. 1954 Vallana spanna 'Campi Raudii', as the label is so ornate.

Jamie, a couple of people took notes so hopefully with time and spare slot in their diary, these notes will appear.
Personally without doubt the Mascarello was amazing. I have never tried a Barolo this old and it was burgundian in its finesse. Super velvety tannins, pure fruit with hints of traditional nebbiolo characteristics being that subtle blend of rose, tar and forest floor.
I also greatly enjoyed the Bruno Giacosa Barbaresco 1996. It was interesting to put this wine up against the Produttori del Barbaresco Montestefano 1996. Virtually all the old Piedmonte wines i have in the cellar are Produttori del Barbaresco so I really enjoy these wines but I found the fruit of the Bruno Giacosa far more pure and linear by comparision. It was hard to believe the two wines were from the same year. If the Produttori was a rollicking old beer wench from an 1800's English tavern, the Bruno was a Countess from the court of Louis Quatorze - elegant and refined.

Any chance a photo?
I'm away from home at the moment, up in the Italian mountains. However cellartracker often has photos, and whilst not the best photo, this does give a flavour if the label and the tns are mine https://www.cellartracker.com/wine.asp? ... d=16FD0C4C
